automatic: Rose Mayo Beasley Gordon B.Lopez Westbrook Love and I'm assuming as a #1 pick with a lot of exposure Oden is automatic To get the final spot Rudy will have to get more votes than Gasol, Augustin, and Chalmers. Gonna be tough, particularly to beat out Gasol.
Are Westbrook & Love really automatic? They've played well enough, but limited exposure on teams that bad...
I don't think Chalmers gets in, he hasn't made that big of an impact. Augustin had a great stretch there for awhile, but I think it's between Gasol and Rudy with the NBA wanting to add that international intrigue to the game.
love is a #5 pick leading all rookies in rebounding EFF/48 and PER on a team that's won 14 out of their last 18. he's automatic : )
Isn't it up to the assistant coaches to vote for players in the rookie/sophomore game? If that's the case, then I think you can throw out the whole argument about the NBA wanting Rudy or Gasol in there for international interest, since they have no input on the picks. Personally, I'd be shocked if Gasol and Augustin get in before Rudy. I really don't think Memphis or Charlotte get more attention than we do. And I don't think either of those players gets more attention than Rudy. -Pop
couldn't agree with you more!!! Why is it that Love still doesn't seem to get the attention he deserves? because of his play of the bench, he has been a major contributor in why Minnesota has been as hot as they are (best record in the NBA since the start of the new year!!!). And Once Love gets the starting nod...the draft day trade of Mayo for Love will prove to be heavily in 'Sota's favor...providing what a trade of Miller brings
There's very little way that Rudy doesn't get in this game, I think, just because he's entertaining, he killed early in the season (and thus can coast a bit on established good will) and Portland is winning. Do they pick the team on positions? If so, then MAYBE he's in trouble because he's got Mayo for sure ahead of him and possibly Gordon, although Gordon was very quiet early and plays for the Clippers. Is it really only 9 per team?
Again ... this is irrelevant. Fans don't vote on this, and the NBA has no influence on the picks. The picks come from the assistant coaches, and each team files one ballot on behalf of the assistant coaches (so teams that have a ridiculous amount of assistant coaches can't stuff the ballot box). You can make an argument that assistant coaches are more apt to pick a guy who has more publicity, and that's why I think Rudy gets any nod over Augustin or Gasol. -Pop
I don't think it's irrelevant at all. Assistant coaches are susceptible to be swayed by whomever fans like just as much as anyone else is. You must remember that the All Star weekend is really all about the fans and giving the fans what they want.
i guess not impossible, but i personally wouldn't bet on it. gordon has started 31 games this year so a lot of ass. coaches will know him pretty well, he is 4th in rookie scoring, and just had a 41 pt game 5 days before the voting. plus he's 4 years younger and a "true" rookie in terms of professional play. in other words he's got a lot going for him.
to tell the truth, i don't think I would select Rudy if I were voting. I love Rudy and think that in the end, he will be one hell of a player, but he falls just beyond the 9 most deserving in my opinion. I am a big believer in "what have you done for me lately" when evaluating rookies. They are just starting to adjust to the NBA, and players like Gordon, Love and several others have been coming on like gangbusters while Rudy has been having some shakier games. A different question is, does Oden deserve a spot?
