Carlos Condit to UFC (UPDATED)

A title defense by World Extreme Cagefighting welterweight champion Carlos Condit against Brock Larson that had been scheduled for WEC 39 on March 1 in Corpus Christi, Texas has been canceled due to an injury sustained by Larson.

Instead of finding a new opponent for Condit, sources have informed FiveOuncesOfPain.com that Zuffa officials have decided to transfer Condit to the UFC’s welterweight division. Additionally, Condit’s Octagon debut could take place in a televised bout during UFC Fight Night 18 on April 1 against Martin Kampmann.

Condit is 22-4 overall in a pro MMA career that began in 2002. Since joining the WEC, he is 5-0 with notable victories over Larson, Hiromitsu Miura, Carlo Prater, and John Alessio. Outside of the promotion, the 24-year old holds notable victories over Frank Trigg, Renato Verissimo, Takuya Wada, and Koji Oshi.

While a final decision has not been made, indications are that the WEC’s welterweight division could be discontinued on a permanent basis. This past December, the promotion disbanded its light heavyweight and middleweight weight classes with most of the divisions’ best fighters having subsequently been transferred to the UFC.

If the WEC moves to end its 170 pound division, fighters that could follow Condit into the UFC include Larson, Miura, Prater, former NCAA champion Johny Hendricks, American Top Team black belt Danilo Villefort, Jesse Lennox, Edgar Garcia, Alex Serdyukov, Justin Haskins, and Luis Sapo.

The WEC had made attempts in recent months to bolster the depth in its welterweight division but was unsuccessful after several fighters it had been interested in were unsuccessful in getting out of contracts with other organizations.

If Condit vs. Kampamann becomes finalized, it could serve as UFN 18’s main event. The card is set to emanate from Nashville, Tennessee with reported matchups that include season eight lightweight winner from The Ultimate Fighter Efrain Escudero taking on Jeremy Stephens; TUF 8 light heavyweight winner Ryan Bader vs. Carmelo Marrero; Tyson Griffin vs. Rafael dos Anjos; Matt Horwich vs. Ricardo Almeida; Steve Steinbeiss vs. Ryan Jensen; Aaron Simpson vs. Tim McKenzie; and Junie Browning vs. Cole Miller.

this is great news.

If they can add Jake Shields too, there's no one at 170 that the UFC doesn't have except for maybe Nick Diaz, but he's not a contender IMO.

Wow. Ok, so the WEC title defense is off... strange, we just saw Brock Larson on Saturday and didn't hear anything about it. So Condit is coming to the UFC and they are scrapping the WEC welterweight division. That is a bit of a shock. The WW division in the UFC is already overloaded. I can see a few WEC welterweights becoming UFC lightweights. Finally, Condit vs. Kampmann is a very interesting fight. Good booking by Joe Silva.

Another divisional shake up appears to be on the horizon for Zuffa owned World Extreme Cagefighting. Several sources have indicated that the promotion will soon disband its 170-pound weight class. The first indication of the latest restructuring is a title fight between WEC champion Carlos Condit and challenger Brock Larson being scrapped from the upcoming WEC 39 event on March 1 in Texas.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com first reported the news on Tuesday, with several sources close to the situation confirming the news to MMAWeekly.com as well.

According to sources speaking anonymously with MMAWeekly.com, the fight between Condit and Larson was cancelled in large part due to a desire to move the current WEC champion over to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

There has been no official confirmation as to who Condit could fight in his first UFC match-up, but there has been speculation that new welterweight Martin Kampmann could be the fighter called upon to face the Arizona Combat Sports standout.

Larson is also expected to make the move to the UFC. Despite reports that the Minnesota fighter was injured, causing the fight cancellation, MMAWeekly.com learned that the fight was simply cancelled and neither fighter had any kind of injury to force the situation.

Several managers were contacted about the possible dissolution of the WEC's welterweight division, but there had been no official word from the promotion at the time of publication about the move. It is still unclear if the entire division will be dissolved, but moving the promotion's champion over to the UFC would seem to be a strong indicator of such.

There are still two welterweight bouts scheduled for WEC 39 – Johny Hendricks vs. Alex Serdyukov and Justin Haskins vs. Douglas Lima – but that wouldn't be out of character for the WEC. The promotion still held a couple of middleweight and light heavyweight bouts, including a light heavyweight title fight, after the dissolution of those two divisions was announced late last year.

MMAWeekly.com sources close to the WEC in early January revealed that the promotion is adding a 125-pound flyweight division soon. There had been speculation that WEC 39 could host the emergence of the flyweight division, but that now seems more like a possibility for WEC 40 in Chicago.

If the WEC welterweight division does meet its demise, that would leave only the 155-pound lightweight class as the only crossover category between the WEC and the UFC.
