You know, I'm not really against the idea. With the US mail, you aren't really guaranteed a day of delivery anyways, save those kind of documents for private courier services like UPS and FED-EX. If it saves a lot of money to do so, I don't really see the harm in making the mail work a 5-day workweek.
I don't really see a problem with making it 3 days a week, or even 1 day per week. Anything urgent these days goes by fedex or email. barfo
Yeah, I was thinking that too. But I think that no one would want that job if they were only able to work 3 days a week? Plus sorting would be kind of retarded????
I only check my mail every two weeks or if I'm expecting something. It builds up but fuck it. who cares, the mailman just jams it all in there.
Geez, the mail is self funded and semi-privatized and one of the very few govt. services that actually works.
Meh, they said they're losing money..or at least less profitable...things are changing now.....looking to cut costs. a 5 day workweek is standard, by being open 6 days, they'll have to stagger employees, have OT, etc.
The ones that do are easier to enumerate. VHA, FHA, and the GI Bill. The other programs have more issues than they actually solve.
Comeon now. You conservatives love to rail about government but it often seems like so much hot air. Please tell me which agencies and programs don't work. Which ones create more issues than they solve? You are the one who said it. Personally, I think government is pretty great. It handles collective issues we could not do on our own. I like the FDA testing drugs before they get to market. I like the SBA guaranteeing loans for small businesses. I like the EPA watching out for our health.
I actually heard if they did this it probably wouldnt be SAT mail that gets cut. Evidently TUE is the slowest mail day so they were think that as a canidate
While I'd love to not get junk mail, I don't think your idea is workable without subsidies from the taxpayer, or much higher postage rates. I've read that 1/2 the revenue the Postal Service receives is from junk mail. barfo
Would it? I know that argument has been made successfully in the past, but it seems to me if we can outlaw spam and telemarketing and billboards, we should be able to outlaw advertising via the post. What is fundamentally special about the postal service in that regard? barfo
I'm not a conservative, you'll find I'm more liberal than people who claim they are liberal on most things. Like, I'm pro-choice, pro-union, pro-civil rights, etc. Especially pro civil liberties. Tho I will talk about a certain conservative's view of govt. programs and agencies, PJ O'Roarke. It takes 200+ govt. programs to help the poor, when for a fraction of the cost of those programs, you could just cut the poor a check big enough so they won't be poor while spending a fraction of what the govt. programs cost. At the same time, these programs restrict what the people receiving the money can do, like owning a car or forming capital to start a business. That's how govt. doesn't work. I'm not against government in the least, just want one that is providing as near $1 of service for $1 of tax. The reason I said the few programs I enumerated work is that they're direct payments to people (vouchers!) that really do make peoples' lives better. Like getting a higher education or owning a home. It empowers people vs. controlling their behavior. FDA isn't doing so good. I remember people getting sick from eating peppers last year and this year it's peanut butter.
That is intersting. I can put my phone number on a block list so advertisers can't call. Why can't I do that with my mail?
Funny side note--in England the mail service delivers just as they do here, except that they will NOT pick up mail. If you want to send a letter, you have to go find a public mail box. When my wife moved here she didn't even know what the flag on the mail box was for.
