Saturday's event might've changed some people's opinions on who the best in the sport is right now. Did it change yours?
Last five fights: Anderson Silva - Patrick Cote (TKO), James Irvin (KO), Dan Henderson (Submission), Rich Franklin (TKO), Nate Marquardt (TKO) Fedor Emelianenko - Andrei Arlovski (KO), Tim Sylvia (Submission), Hong Man Choi (Submission), Matt Lindland (Submission), Mark Hunt (Submission) Georges St. Pierre - BJ Penn (TKO), John Fitch (U-Dec), Matt Serra (TKO), Josh Koscheck (U-Dec), Matt Hughes (Submission)
Fedor, 1 loss in his career which was a cut stoppage. Hasn't always faced the best competition each time out, but he's beaten all of the top HW's at one time or another save for Barnett and Randy. GSP still has his upset loss to Serra and Silva hasn't been fed the toughest competition at 185 IMO. Not his fault that 170 and 205 are more talented divisions.
It is hard for me to pick between Fedor and Silva. They are both amazing and dominant, but i think Silva is better pound for pound. I wish there was a way these two could match up. Silva walks around at 225, and Fedor is a small HW. I think if you gave Silva enough time to prep for the fight, he would do it.
Cases against them being #1: Fedor - has faced two top-ten ranked heavyweights in the last three years; - fights against top contenders (Minotauro, Cro Cop) ended in decisions; - many of his wins are against natural light heavyweights or smaller. Anderson - has never avenged any of his four losses; - losses came against inferior competition; - has only defeated three top-ranked opponents (Henderson, Franklin x 2, Marquardt) in 27 fights. GSP - unable to finish fights consistently; - mostly fights smaller fighters; - lost his title to unranked opponent by knockout.
I would put Silva or GSP 1a and 1b. I just think theyre more skilled than Fedor. The technique that Silva has is insane and he can probably translate that to any class. Same goes for GSP, his wrestling,IMO, would be just as dominant if he were a HW or LW. I don't want to be selling Fedor short, I know he has good submissions and striking but thats just how I feel. I am probably only saying this because againist Arlovski, Fedor looked pretty human.
yeah Fedor looked a bit human, but all in all he got hit with a couple of good shots and was still standing there. Let's not forget GSP got caught and tapped out to the vicious striking off Matt Serra and Silva struggle against Travis 'can't make weight' Lutter and probably lost the 1st round to Dan Henderson. IMO the end result is AA still lost to Fedor in under 4 mins.
Fedor His one loss was not only a cut, but a cut from a illegal blow, and it was only named a loss because itw as a tourny so someone had to move on, so they couldnt say it was a no contest. GSP second.
I wont vote. People throw around P4P to easily. A pound for pound fighter should be able to perform well in multiple weight classes hence the term POUND FOR POUND. All of the above really have sat pretty at just a single class. Anderson's the lone one who moved up weight to fight at 205 in the UFC but but he was hardly tested at 205. Fedors been sitting at heavy forever. GSP at 170 for quite sometime now and is generally bigger than most 170ibers.. I think we'll see just how great he is if he moved up a weight class. Tough tough tough.... I'd probably go with Silva right now since he has at least moved up a weight class to fight at 205 and dominated the fight. GSP. I'd like to see him drop to 155 or move up to 185 and win a few before nominating him best P4P. Being dominate at one weight class makes you the best fighter at that weight but not the best POUND FOR POUND fighter. If I had to choose among the 3, I'd go with Anderson Silva. *tear*. wish BJ had won that fight. Then there would be no arguement! haha
I've always thought pound 4 pound was a ranking for the skill of the fighter. So a fighter doesnt necessarily have to move up and down weight classes.
Then you should say, whos the most SKILLED fighter. Not POUND for POUND fighter. i'd be fine with that and the vote would be easy. I think Silva is the most skilled out of the 3. GSP 2nd and Fedor 3rd.
^a little bias there that gsp beating your man? skill = all around game.. although he has superior standup game.. his ground and takedown defense is pretty average to me.. skills: gsp, fedor, silva p4p: fedor (fight guys that can be considered as LHW), silva, gsp (agree on you about being able to move classes and still dominant)
not biased at all. GSP coming in 2nd place and Im biased? haha. Silva can be dominant on the ground. He just hasn't had to use it.... Im a huge fan of Fedor since his days in Pride. I would've ranked him #1 if I was biased.
Hey, I don't see Uriah Faber on that poll. I'm voting based on GSP's latest fight. (I don't see Fedor, if he was 170, being able to hang with the fighters in that class, but I think if you make GSP Fedor's size, he could take Fedor) Is that a right way to analyze this pound for pound argument? And have they come out with a playstation MMA game yet? I know GSP had that loss to Sierra, but he got caught being too confident and under prepared. He has been an animal since that wake up call.
Look at it this way when it comes to Fedor, he's about 230-235 Lbs and faces guys that range from 220 to 300 lbs, the other guys face guys with 10 to 15 lbs difference max. Fedor faces bigger and stronger guys than him regularly and uses his skill to beat them. p4p that makes him extremely excellent
You actually make a pretty good point. Fedor could easily drop to LHW but fights the big boys. If he took out BROCK I'd easily move him up to the #1 spot.
Your absolutely right. It was a wake up call and he took it the right way. It was the first time he was completely beat like that. I hope BJ has the same mentality. Retirement. That would be total disappointment...
Retirement would be the ultimate tap out and make BJ a huge bitch. I really hope he doesn't. I also hope he pressures dana to bring in some other top LW's for him to face.
