I asked this in another thread and no one could give me an answer. Possibly one of the easiest and most effective play in all of basketball, and we use it like twice a game? Can someone please give me an answer? Nate has even said it's unguardable, and yet he doesn't use it. Is it an inability to teach it? Or does he just not like getting easy points? We could at least use it to try and get mismatches to score on, but instead we play iso way too often and keep shooting jumpers.
we run the pick and roll quite often...at least when I'm watching. I can't catch these east coast games though. To me, its a bit sloppy when I've seen the blazers run it...they're not that in-tune with each other where it comes naturally.
A solid pick and roll needs a point guard that is a threat to hit a jumpshot and a PG that can pass. Sergio is the main reason we don't run it anymore.
To me, its fairly obvious when the blazers are running a pick and roll...lots of telegraphing. You're supposed to disguise it. Pick and Rolls only work when the post player attacks the basket and Oden gets no touches and LMA isn't really great at attackign the post.
I don't think this is entirely true. If you'll recall one play that Maurice and KP got out of our really crappy 27 win team was the ability to run a pick and roll with Damon/Van Exel and Joel. However, when Nate was hired he hardly ever ran the play the next year (with Joel or Maagloire). I don't believe in coincidences and think Nate prefers the ISO/pick and pop over the pick and roll to be perfectly honest. While Sergio's lack of shot (it has improved this year he has more arc at least) doesn't help I just don't think Nate really runs the play a lot regardless.
he's actually more effective at it, as he does get to the rim and gets fouled, losing the ball 20 feet into the air.
Damon and Van Exel could hit a jumpshot though. I remember the pick and roll was where Joel really flourished. Its kind of sad that we haven't gone back to that. McMillan loves his isolation offense and I'm not sure whats going to change his mind.
Oden seems to not be comfortable with the game still it seems. He sets an unnatural looking screen and it looks like he's just going through the motions. With time and experience he should be fine. He sets the screen too far away and rolls too early.
Oh, I know they could. My point in that was more that even if Sergio could hit a jumpshot I'm not sure Nate would run it more than maybe the once or twice he does a game right now. If that.
Brandon and LaMarcus' pick and roll used to be our money play last season until teams started figuring it out and then we went away from it. Maybe it's time to go back to it.
In a pick and roll the guy who rolls to the hoop actually gets the ball passed to him. We don't do that. We set the pick and the guard shoots or passes to someone else for a jumper.
