Lewis, Morris lead Giants to blowout of Phillies

SAN FRANCISCO 13, PHILADELPHIA 0
PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Rookie Fred Lewis gave Matt Morris alead and the veteran then made quick work of the PhiladelphiaPhillies.

Lewis hit his first career grand slam and drove in acareer-high four runs and Morris carried a no-hitter into thesixth inning as the San Francisco Giants notched a 13-0 victoryover the Phillies on Friday in the opener of a four-game series.

Lewis, who had been in a 2-for-20 slump, blasted a 3-2 changeupthat bounced off the left field fence and into the crowd forhis third homer of the season and a 4-0 lead in the secondinning.

"I'm just trying to make a name for myself and trying to stay inthe big leagues as long as possible," said Lewis, who hit hisfirst career homer as part of a cycle on May 13 vs. Colorado.

Meanwhile, Morris (6-2), who beat the Phillies on May 4 in SanFrancisco, was the recipient of the early cushion and was nearlyunhittable.

The nine-year veteran allowed just one hit while throwing 55 of93 pitches for strikes. He has allowed three runs or less innine of his 11 starts.

"What a job he did," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said."He has done it quite a few times this year where we needed alift and he went out there and gave us a great effort. He hasbeen the stopper when we needed someone to go out there andpitch well."

The 32-year-old righthander allowed just three walks beforeShane Victorino broke up the no-hit bid with a single justinside the first base line.

"I just tried to keep the ball down, go with what was working,"said Morris, who allowed just two runs and eight hits in seveninnings in his last start against Philadelphia.

"I feel confident from my previous starts. I watched my tapefrom the last time I faced these guys and tried to duplicateit."

San Francisco, which had averaged less than three runs in losing
five of its last six games, blew the game open early with a
five-run second inning.

"When you have struggled the way we have it is nice to see theguys loosen up, relax and gets some runs on the board and reallylet the pitching relax a little bit, too," Bochy said.

After Morris left, Steve Kline pitched two scoreless frames andthe newly acquired Randy Messenger threw a scoreless ninth forthe Giants, who played the fourth game of a 10-game road trip.Messenger was acquired Thursday from Florida for ArmandoBenitez.

Ray Durham hit a three-run shot - his fifth of the season - inthe fourth for San Francisco, who dropped two of three to NewYork to open their 10-game road trip.

Barry Bonds, who has two homers in his last 19 games, added anRBI double for the Giants. The seven-time MVP remains ninehomers shy of tying Hank Aaron's all-time record of 755.

The Giants battered Phillies starter Adam Eaton (5-4), who hadwon his previous two starts. The righthander exited in thesecond - his shortest outing of the season. He allowed fiveruns, six hits and walked four.

"I don't have too much to say," Phillies manager Charlie Manuelsaid. "Eaton had a lot of three-ball, two-strike counts. Helooked like he had trouble establishing the strike zone. (TheGiants) kept adding on."

The Giants' five-run second frame was aided by a call that didnot go the Phillies' way.

Manuel was ejected in the inning for arguing balls and strikeswhen Morris pulled back an attempt at a bunt with two strikes. The call proved to be a critical one. It would have been thethird out of the inning, but Morris - who had a career-highthree hits - singled and Randy Winn drew a walk before Lewis'grand slam.

"I felt like he bunted at the ball. The ball was a strikeanyway, too. (First base umpire Tim McClelland) said he didn'tbunt at it."

Eaton was not willing to use the call as a crutch, however.

"Obviously, the (umpires) didn't see it that way," Eaton said."When a call doesn't go your way, what you think should happen, obviously it's magnified when you can't get anybody else out.The grand slam put a big magnifying glass to that, but still noexcuses. To perform like I did is pretty frustrating."

Francisco Rosario then relieved Eaton in the third, but left thegame one inning later after being struck on the knee by a linedrive off the bat of Lewis. Clay Condrey came into the game andpromptly allowed the first two runners to reach. After an RBIgroundout by Kevin Fransden, he gave up a three-run blast toPedro Feliz.

Carlos Ruiz had the only other hit for Philadelphia, which haslost four straight at home for the first time all season, andwas shut out for the first time since September 10 of lastseason.
