Is this an act or has the guy completely lost his mind? I saw the rap video a week ago, but this one doesn't make sense.

Well, Phoenix is delving into a form of spoken word, so I see the similarity.

That was funny. Acting like a freak seems to work for other people trying to get their musical career going but doubt it will work for him.

Letterman was hilarious. There's no one better at making the most from so little.

"Juaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight" has got to be one of the best lines ever.

This has a very Andy Kaufman feel to it, though.....I'm not so sure I'm buying the act.

The guy spent half his childhood crammed in a van on the Metolius River just outside of Camp Sherman with like 5 other brothers and sisters. Of course he's going to be a little bit wacked out.

Like it was said in the Laker thread about this Casey Afflek is filming it and it is an act for a mockementary.

I would say his brother dying right in front of him from a drug overdose played a bigger role.

    Ouch.

    -- SAD. Social anxiety disorder?
    -- Drugs?
    -- Takes himself too seriously.
-- Felt mocked from the get-go.

I seriously doubt it's all an act. I think he just doesn't care about acting any more and is into his music... and isn't quite sure why people are laughing at him.

A couple of years ago I had some facial hair below my lip. A "soul patch" kind of deal. I was growing it kind of as a joke, but as I walked home late, late one night a homeless guy asked me what time it was. I told him 2:30 or whatever and then we had the following exchange:

    Him: Nice facial hair.
    Me: Thanks.
    Him: Is it real?

How the fuck was I supposed to answer that? It amused me, but I think Joaquin felt something similar when Dave asked about his beard.

Interesting, uncomfortable interview. Dave WAS funny but I don't think they emerged from the encounter as better friends :)

I don't get how acting like a drug addict on Letterman as "Joaquin Phoenix, mockumentary character" while promoting a film as "Joaquin Phoenix, actor" adds anything to the mockumentary. Unless the point is that only brain-dead losers try a career in rap music? Or perhaps the point is that Phoenix is "punking" the world at this point.

I just shaved a two-month beard yesterday. My wife thought it would be funny to keep the mustache overnight. I went to Subway for lunch and felt so uncomfortable I just grabbed my food and got out of the door. Mustache was gone this morning, so I can understand how he'd feel uncomfortable.

Yes, if that character is the star of the mockumentary, I don't want to see the film.
I think he said hip-hop, not rap.

Tell that to my iTunes. You're speaking to the choir.
