Angels Extend Santana

Right-hander Ervin Santana has signed a four-year extension with the Angels, SI.com has learned.

The deal also includes a fifth option year.

Santana, who avoided arbitration with the extension, is a key part of one of baseball's best young rotations, if not its best rotation. The Angels surely would like to get ace John Lackey signed to an extension, as well.

Santana, 26, went 16-7 with a 3.49 ERA last year, when he made the All-Star team and executed a terrific comeback. He is 51-37 lifetime, all with the Angels. The value of his new contract isn't known yet.

The contract is believed to be worth close to $30 million for the four guaranteed years. If the fifth year option is exercised, it could be worth $42 million, according to WFAN's Sweeny Murti.

The deal includes two free-agent years if the Angels pick up the option for 2013.
