I am really looking after this movie. I read the book some time ago and enjoyed quite a bit. I just kept thinking how it would be translated to the big screen. It was pretty good, although I have not read the book yet so you may have a different take on it. I would imagine the book would have gone through more of the boys life and explained a couple things that were left unanswered. Some of the scenes about his childhood seemed rushed. Now that I think about it, the last three movies I saw after reading the book were all pretty big disappointments (DaVinci Code, Kite Runner, 21). I think my opinion of the movie may drastically change once I read it.
Most book to movie films are disappointments for people who've read the books, 'cause it leaves so much out in the film.
Definitely want to see this, will finally be able to in March (when I can catch up on a lot of movies) since I'll be done with school.
Since when has portraying suffering on film become so taboo? The media of film is one of the most effective ways to make someone interact with and connect with the sufferers. Slumdog did that brilliantly. Also, this class of people in India have so much more bullshit to deal with in their lives that they could be protesting against.

I just saw this, it was great. Rarely do I agree with the Oscar winning best film, but this deserved it.
The second time I watched it, I kind of disliked the improbability/cheesiness of the plot. I feel like, if this was an Indian movie, most people would ridicule the cliches (especially towards the end). It definitely stood out for the acting and the technical aspects (the score, cinematography, etc.). I don't have a problem with it winning Best Picture, mainly because I feel like it was a strong year.
