Are the Lakers on steroids?

With Alex Rodriguez's recent revalation about using performance-enhancing drugs, every successful player in professional sports seems to be under suspicion.

Guys like Manny Ramirez, who were once safe from skepticism, are now being put under the microscope by the media and fans alike, and with good reason.

So why should it stop at baseball?

If guys like Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire can put themselves into the record books with steroids, why wouldn't basketball players want to do the same?

Sure, being all 'roided up and muscle-bound doesn't exactly serve an NBA point guard. But if you're a big man who can't even make it up the floor to begin with, why not get as huge and strong as you can to push guys around?

Since the Los Angeles Lakers are the best team in the league right now, I thought it only fair to begin the wild steroid accusations with them. So let's take a look at some of the Lakers and assess their likelihood of steroid use.

Kobe Bryant - Obviously the first person you would suspect based on performance alone, Kobe's lithe physique doesn't exactly indicate steroid use. But what about that "eye of the tiger" he displays at the end of the game? Increased focus and stamina are one effect of performance-enhancers, so maybe after playing 40+ minutes the 'roids give him the extra edge he needs to get his legs behind that final buzzer-beater.

Pau Gasol - His flabby exterior makes it plainly obvious that Pau has never lifted a single weight, let alone taken steroids. Unless steroids are known to produce an unecessary amount of facial hair, Pau's in the clear.

Lamar Odom - Wild mood swings are a tell-tale sign of steroid use, and who has wilder mood swings than Lamar? One game he'll be jumping up and down on the sidelines screaming his head off and the next he'll be moping on the bench after a sub-par performance on the court. It's a tough theory though, considering performance-enhancers are supposed to create a consistency of play and, as Laker fans are well aware, Lamar's efforts are anything but consistent.

Andrew Bynum - No Laker has undergone more drastic physical changes than Andrew. He came into the league soft and gawky, and over the last two years he has transformed into a Mr. Olympia finalist. Some will say that his body has changed due to normal human growth and weight training, considering the fact that he was 17 when he came into the league. Please! Two freak knee injuries in two years? 'Roid rage on Gerald Wallace? Yeah, that sounds natural.

Derek Fisher - That body. Those guns. 34 years old? Fish's only saving grace is that he came into the league built like a rock. But maintaining that physique into his later years can only point to one thing -- juice.

Sun Yue and Adam Morrison - If there are two people in the league who aren't on steroids, it's Sun and Adam Morrison. Coincidentally, they're also the two guys in the league that are probably considering it the most.

Steve Lattimer - Wait, he's not on the Lakers. But he's definitely on something...
