Do the Blazers HAVE to make a deal?

    Due to the economy the poorer teams and or owners are dumping players. Richer teams and owners are gonna be picking up some talent during the fire sale and beefing up their rosters.

    The Blazers, who arguably have the most desirable trading chip on the table (RLEC), are in a postion to upgrade their roster without it costing them a whole lot, and are in a position where they can probably outbid anybody for a player or players they want.

    Since the competition is going to get stronger, there is talent available, and we are in a favorable position don't we HAVE to make a deal just to stay competitive?

    No, not if the right deal isn't available. If its a latteral move, a move that mortages our future, or a move that we give up to much i wouldn't do it. If the right deal isn't out there i'd just wait.

    Yes, IMO we need to make a deal.

    RLEC expiring doesn't give us 12M in cap space. It gives us 7-8 at most, less if we don't get to the 58.8M cap figure (since BRI is going down this year)

    And in getting that 7-8M, we give up the ability to use MLE, BAE, veteran's exceptions, etc.

    Use the LEC now, get a stud with a long contract, and use the MLE to bring in a player this summer if we need to.

    You keep saying Batum can't shoot. Wallace makes Batum look like MJ with his outside shot. I'm sure you want Wallace and he is a upgrade over batum but it has nothing to do with Batum's shooting. Batum doesn't even shoot that much so it doesn't hurt when he is shooting bad. He has had a few good shooting games and plays good defense especially for a rookie.

    I think it'd be wasting away a great opportunity to upgrade the roster in some way. But if the deal isn't right, then don't make it.

    Let's address this "mortgaging the future" thing.

    We're only mortgaging the future if the player in question is part of the future. Players on our team I don't think are around in summer 2010:

    Sergio, Blake, Outlaw, Frye, Diogu, RLEC, Shav.

    Players who are perhaps in the short-term future who may be replaceable, depending on the trade:

    Bayless (if we trade for a relatively young PG), Webster, Przy.

    "Long term future": Roy, Aldridge, Oden, Rudy, Batum

    If you trade any of the first ten, it's all good b/c you're not mortgaging anything. Frye for Salmons? Sure, may not be perfect, but it's an upgrade in talent. It gives us more pieces.

    If we let RLEC, CFEC and IDEC expire, we'll be around $8 million in cap room. Letting Blake go would free up around $4 million more. Letting Outlaw go would free up a further $4 million.

    So, depending on what Portland wants to do, they can have between $8 million to $16 million of cap space. But the higher levels of cap space would cost them productive reserve-caliber players.

    IMO, if the $16 million of cap space could secure Josh Childress and Ramon Sessions in free agency, I'd be fine letting Blake and Outlaw go. And those would be two nice pieces to add before leaving "under salary cap"-land for the foreseeable future.

    So, no, Pritchard doesn't have to make a deal now. It is possible that he can be productive in the summer. But his options are more constrained in the summer. So, now would be the ideal time to scare up a good use of the RLEC.

    It would mean that Portland will try and be a player in 2010, since this summer's cap space is shot to hell due to Miles.

    This is the first year in a long time where Portland has trade assets that other teams really, really covet. Though Portland does not need to make any deals at all to be successful, it would have to be considered a failure if KP did nothing. If he can't get a non-draft deal done this year, he isn't ever going to be able to. Since his big plan was to build through the draft then make a deal to land an impact veteran he better be able to actually make said deal.

    we already built through the draft. the draft now should be getting bench warmers with potential to develop and international players.

    Exactly.

    At this point in the plan, the team has done all it needed to do via the draft. Now is the time to get a veteran, if they can.

    If they can't, then KP either didn't try hard enough, over-valued his players, or simply fucked up.
