Should the Death Penalty be invoked for Mass Financial Fraud?

It seems to me that probably one of the reasons there has been so much financial fraud lately is because the penalties are not serious enough. When you see situations where somebody who committs fraud to the point where they have basically destroyed peoples lives, they might as well have killed them. I mean, what have they really done when folks who are in their elder years find out that somebody stole their whole retirement, and they are too old to start over? So it is simple. Any fraud over an amount that the average person could earn in a lifetime should result in the death penalty.

Besides, you know these maggots are just riding out their time in minimum security prison, and then heading to wherever they have the cash stashed and living it up. Let's end that bullshit now.

Still, you figure the amount of pain and suffering caused by someone who caused thousands of people to lose their life-savings vs...say the pain surrounding a single woman who was raped. And not the violent rape, but the "We were too drunk" rape.

It's pretty sad that these guys get to hang out in their Penthouses for another five years while the legal process takes its toll. Granted, it was irresponsible for these investors to have all of their eggs in one basket...but they aren't to blame. Clearly there was someone who is to blame in these situations, and they deserve jail time for the rest of their life. As for execution....I don't know.

 

I don't believe in the death penalty because we've seen multiple cases come up where people have been cleared after several (even tens of) years in prison. So I would have to say no it should not be invoked for financial fraud.

 

I only believe the death penalty should be used in murder trials. Getting swindled out of a few bucks doesn't kill people.

 

Chris Dodd and Barney Frank should be the first to be sentenced.

 

My position as well.

 

There are appropriate penalties already, most can be applied consecutively for each count which can quickly add up to life imprisonment.

The problem is judges are usually bought and don't apply the appropriate sentence.

In our current situation, most (tens of thousands) of the criminals are not even being investigated let alone prosecuted.

They are instead being paid rewards and bonuses with our future tax dollars.

 

The death penalty is a terrible use of the legal system. I have four issues with it:

1. It's the only penalty that's irrevocable

2. It's more expensive than just giving someone a life sentence

3. It hasn't really proven to be a deterrent

4. And it's just not harsh enough. If you don't believe in an afterlife, you're giving the person the easy way out. If you do, eternity is a long time. Taking 20-50 years of hell on earth isn't going to mess with God's plan.

As for applying it for white collar crime? I don't think it's appropriate.

How about the death penalty for drug dealers? They ruin many more lives than financial swindlers do. And while we're at it, let's kill the people who pollute our air and our water, and put chemicals and preservatives in our foods. Let's just kill anybody who does anything we don't like. That would solve all our problems.

 

I say take all their wealth and lock them up forever. That would prevent others.
