Ok, so we gave Triano a chance, but clearly it isn't working out. We need a coach with a big profile. Somebody the players have to respect. I wish we could sign Phil Jackson, but in lieu of that, we need the biggest name we can get. Not because big name = big results, but because our players are listless and they won't listen to a nobody for more than a few months. Who's it gonna be?
I honestly have no idea. I feel like this team has no direction right now. A year ago, this team desperately needed the proper coach. Now I consider it the least of our priorities. The roster is just too flawed.
The team sucks but the roster isn't getting overhauled. It seems Colangelo can identify a single mistake but not a series of mistakes. A coach like Jerry Sloan could get at least 47 wins out of this squad, though. Who out there will get more juice out of this orange?
i agree with chutney, although, i think a top notch coach could probably get us to .500 but i highly doubt 47 wins is attainable with this roster. i think this team needs a larry brown type coach who would have the reputation to confront bosh and caledron on their defensive nonchalance
If we plan on keeping marion, i think we should look for a coach like D'antoni who will get this team to run more.
He won't leave NY any time soon. I say we try and get Coach K. Triano knows him, and could work as an assistant. If we could bring Coach K to the NBA, we'd have a one of the best coaches in the league, right off the bat.
i know, i meant someone like him. How's that Italian coach everyone was talking bout a little while ago?
Coach K? I don't think he's waited 30 years to come to the NBA for a team like ours, LOL. NCAA > NBA right now.
Theres only two coaches that can change a team like raps and make it alot better 1) The former Wizard coach 2) Avery Johnson BUT this team wont change because its "franchise" player has given up on it, he settles wayyy too much for jumpshot and her barely attacks the rim anymore (he use to avg about 9 free throws a game, now he avg less then 7). For example last night, so many times bosh and marion couldev ran a give and go but because Bosh is Stupid and think he alone can do everything he just never passed. So yes Triano hasn't brought any success but in the month of Jan the team went 7-9, with wins over rockets and etc. In my opinion its not even worth changing a coach right now, because this team doesn't have a leader and the captians on the team arent playing well at all!
The only NCAA basketball coach I can see being successful in the NBA is Coach Calipari from Memphis and Roy Williams from North Carolina, not a homer pick either. Their coaching style is much like D'Antoni, but the problem is they needs the right players. They needs very fast and athletic players to run their system obviously. The Roy Williams system is more flexible then Calipari's.
Meh, Avery Johnson isn't much better than Mitchell. I wouldn't mind bringing him in, but I hope we upgrade our assistant coaches if we bring him in. Mitchell, Avery, and Doc Rivers aren't very different imo. I think its their players and assistant coaches that make the differences.
Paul Westhead and the Loyola Marymount offense would be perfect for this team if they want to play run & gun style basketball. I really depends on the direction they take this offseason though. Is Colangelo going to blow the team up or is he going to bring a guy like Shawn Marion back and committ to building a team similar to the Phoenix Suns one? I also like the suggestion of Eddie Jordan.
shape go back to the lakers forum and stay over there because honestly GOD couldnt make this team into contenders
Bosh can't run and Calderon is too conservative, so I don't think a "run and gun", high possessions team works for us. The rookie or sophomore Bosh would run circles around the Bosh of today. His knees are fucked. Calderon is so focused on not turning the ball over he pulls up on half our fast breaks. Roko is a much better fast break point guard. I keep hearing that Colangelo wants an up-tempo team but frankly the teams that have won titles haven't been up-tempo teams, at least in the last decade. They've been half court teams with good defense. That being said, Jeff Van Gundy is too far in the other direction. We had a poor man's JVG in Kevin O'Neill and it was miserable. You can't force a style on this team, you can only hope to make the most of what we have. We need a coach like Gus Heddnik, if anyone gets that reference. Someone creative with prestige that the players will trust. Someone who will assess what this team has, which isn't much, and formulate a way to have success. I just don't think there is someone out there right now with that ability. Perhaps Messina would be the right choice if I didn't think our team was too immature for a first time NBA coach.
The run-and-gun talk irritates me a bit. If we really wanted that to be our team philosophy, we traded the wrong PG and kept our old head coach far too long. Seems like a cop-out, IMO. I have no problem with the team incorporating more fast breaks into the gameplan, but someone in the organization has to recognize that uptempo starts with good defense (forcing missed jumpshots and turnovers). The Phoenix Suns of the last 4 seasons were really an anomaly, in that their uptempo offense was so explosive that they could achieve success even without an emphasis on defense. In any other situation, there has to be a commitment to perimeter D. I think that has to be our focus in the next couple offseasons. Eddie Jordan would be a nice choice.
btw, I think the biggest indictment of Colangelo is that, 3 years after he came in, we're back debating about the team philosophy.
The 09 Raps and the 09 Wizards are quite similar. What makes Jordan able to help us more than he helped them? I fear getting a coach the players will tune-out and wasting two or three years in the process.
