I have a friend whose favorite player was Bill Laimbeer. Of course, he's from Flint and a Pistons fan.

Who'da thunk Laimbeer would turn into a great coach, of women's basketball? Life is strange.

Just FYI, Bill Lambeer went to high school in Palos Verdes, CA which is about 2 minutes from my place. Palos Verdes is like a mini version of Beverly Hills. Very snobby, stuck up people. I cant believe a bully like Lambeer came out of there.

I have to admit...I'm a bit surprised by the Reggie Miller love in here. I thought I was alone all these years.

I saw an article once on Laimbeer, I think in Sports Illustrated. It said he was the only NBA player whose father made more than he did. Isiah Thomas, who grew up poor on the South Side of Chicago, said when he first met Laimbeer, Laimbeer told him how he used to fish for lobster off his family's private pier and asked Thomas, "Did you do anything like that?" Thomas said he could not believe that anyone could be both so privileged and so naive.

Wow, they must have a really insane place up there. Palos Verdes is almost all cliffs when it comes to beach access. You have to be pretty determined, and rich to build safe beach access going down the cliffs for just your property.

That is pretty incredible that Laimbeer grew up to be such an enforcer given what was stated about his youth. I respect him a bit more now that I've learned he was able to overcome his privileged life.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
Absolutely. It's hard to make it into basketball when one is rich and white. It's rather amazing that he didn't end up in tennis or golf, considering his background. It's a testament to his desire.

Laimbeer goes to show that no obstacle is impossible to overcome, even being born to country clubs, as long as you work hard.

    Isn't it obvious?!? Spud Webb!!!

My favorite current non-Blazer player is DWade. Everytime I see him play he seems to get better and make everyone around him better. The guy works his booty off eventhough he's a super-duper star. And he's pretty humble.

Unfortunately he'll never be a Blazer, well at least not until he's 42 and has a bad contract. :sigh:

Clearly he missed his calling when he decided not to go for the NBA draft.

It also helps to be 6'11".

Very very hard for such a tall person to play golf. Some height is an advantage in tennis but not that much.
