So I might have to go to Mexico for work in a few weeks. Recently there has been some travel advisories and I'm wondering if its still prudent to go. As comfortable as I am with going there, the recent travel advisories have me a bit apprehensive. Have you ever traveled to areas where it was dangerous? I remember my cousin used to have to travel to Pakistan and other dangerous types of areas for work....would you be scared or would you just go? Generally I don't think there will be a problem though as I'm down in Guerrero, which is far from the border towns. http://www.freep.com/article/20090226/FEATURES07/90226085
I grew up in N.E. Portland in the 80's! That was pretty dangerous! If you go to Mexico, just let me know and I'll put some calls into my people.
One new source specifically mentioned that three Arizona Universities mentioned Tjuana, Mexico as a place to stay away from. http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2009/02/21/20090221springbreak-ON.html When the US State Department states a warning about going to mexico I think we should pay attention. Remember about this married man who was on cocaine and meth at the time and was beaten to death by 4 mexican cops. http://www.kgw.com/news-local/stories/kgw_092608_news_botner_mexico_arrests.b4bc8c28.html I'm sorry but I would rather go to the Bahama's or the US Virgin Islands (my favorite) for my vacation.
Not sure if that's a joke, but if not, that is a VERY bad idea. I've traveled extensively through Mexico. Yes, there are more warnings now, but the same rules of safe travel still apply: Avoid dreary areas, don't get drunk, take taxis to and from the hotel, don't flash money, blend in, etc. I may be headed to Bogota, Columbia soon and that is what I'll do.
The further away from the border you are, the better off you are. Most of the problem areas are near the border.
Yup. I'd also steer clear of Mexico City and the resort towns. There are some really great cities and towns in central Mexico I'd have no worry about visiting even now. Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Queretaro, Patzcuaro.... Sharks go where the most prey is. The resorts and the border. I'm leery of Mexico City just because I've heard abductions there are on the rise, and I really don't have much use for the place anyway.
I'll be in Acapulco. Have a driver, staying in a gated community with armed guards...thinking twice about hitting the bars and clubs though when I'm there...even going into town to the mall might be not a good idea, lots of military driving around....could have random shootings. I believe there are bad problems in Sinaloa, which is where I am told lots of the shit is originating from.
Personally . . . love Mexico and Baja California. Good fishing, nice people, cheap drinks, beautiful beaches, good seafood, nice resorts . . . live it up on a cheap budget. Oh and there is always Adelitas.
Just stay alert and look confident. I went to Haiti recently and was told from many people how kidnappings are so common and I should reconsider going; I was fine. Isn't most of the stuff at the border between drug cartels and govnt officials/police anyway. They don't care about you. Just pay attention and don't be stupid.
Given your many posts about getting hammered drunk, I'd advise you not go. I just don't see it going well at all for you there.
I went to Puerto Vallarta in April with three buddies and did a considerable amount of drinking. We went to places that were only semi-touristy and I never really felt unsafe. Someone kidnapping me would be wasting their time, though, unless they want me to pay them off with a big chunk of student loan debt. Ed O.
Mexico is really only dangerous for skanky college girls who drink way to much at dirty Mexican clubs. You are not a skanky college girl. I could picture you helping a Mexican kidnap a girl, though.
i did the TJ/Rosarito run a few years ago for those skanks. ended up at adelitas at like 3am, which is a whorehouse in the middle of Tijuana. cracy shit. not as crazy as the strip clubs though, which I guess have trannys
