I just bought this movie (by Bill Maher) and I gotta say it's a breath of fresh air. He brings to light the million contradictions with all the various religions in the world. Has anyone else seen this documentary? Even as a kid when I first heard about the talking snake in the garden of Eden I didn't believe it. It was something you'd hear in a Dr. Seuss book. The guy living in the large fish for three days, I mean.. come on!
I saw the movie, I thought it was well-done. It wasn't hateful, but it was certainly skeptical of religion and the endorsements of violence that happen within religion, despite all religions' claims of valuing peace and love.
I haven't seen it yet but I am thinking about buying it. They're supposed to be available at Wal-mart but since I live in the Midwest you never know. This can and has been debated for centuries but I don't believe the bible is supposed to be taken literally but rather symbolically.
a talking snake or a man living inside a fish are no less believable than that jesus was the son of god, worked miracles, rose from the dead, and flew bodily up to heaven (to paraphrase a Maherism).
Yes, he criticized Judaism and Islam, as well. He, himself, was brought up Catholic and his mother was Jewish.
I've seen Mahar around LA out on the town. That guy is a total scrub, everytime I've seen him, just seemed depressed and low energy compared to his TV persona.
I've always got that feeling about him. Every time I've heard him try to promote his movie all I could think was "Man he really needs to find god"
yeah. he's in that whole playboy mansion/hollywood scene. i'm not denying that he probably gets some hot ass or parties it up, but whenever I've seen him around in person, he just looks kind of depressed. the thing is he's like 50 years old, out on the scene in hollywood with wannabe actors/actresses. I see the same thing in Hugh Hefner now too. all the women around him now are more than show than anything. hard to explain but bachelorhood for life is kind of sad once they're all older and trying to be all cool in hollywood. hollywood and all that life kind of drains your soul. when you're young, its all cool and shit because you're just fucking around...but when you get later on in life i would imagine its quite sad.
He's low energy because he smokes so much pot. I thought the movie was funny but his smug smart ass routine wears a bit. For the record I think his show on HBO is good when there is a good panel, but almost unwatchable when he has to carry the show himself (like last week).
I personally find his smugness a huge turn off to any good points he makes about anything. He's repeated the same colloquialisms, jokes and snipes so often that I doubt anyone could have a serious conversation with him. It's not enlightening, it's just annoying. I find my self with the same point of view on nearly every topic, but I just can't stand the way he carries himself and talks to anyone who thinks differently.
Don't have HBO. I used to watch his ABC show at times. I find him very cynical for much of his schtick, I don't think its a scthick.
