http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/sports/kings/archives/020217.html We can easily make roster space by dropping Ruffin, and picking up DG for the league minimum. He's exactly what we need out of the backup PF position. Someone who can hustle, get boards, and hit the midrange J. After watching him in Cleveland for a few years, I think he'd be a perfect fit here. Definitely more so than Outlaw or Frye as the second string 4.
Re: Get Drew Gooden From the rumors swirling around the Spurs are said to the favorites for signing him, he could also go back to the Cavs. I would like to see him as a Blazer but I think he's going to go to one of those two teams so he has a chance at a championship.
Re: Get Drew Gooden Am I the only one who thinks buyouts need to stop? Seems like a way for good teams to get better without giving up anything
Re: Get Drew Gooden You recall a few weeks ago when we realized that went GO went to the bench in favor of Przy, there was very little drop off? That's what adding a rejuvenated Gooden could be like for our PF position. This could not only better our second unit, but also leave Aldridge refreshed in the latter parts of the game when he's really needed. Frye may be coming on with increased minutes, but he's still a softie who can't rebound or play defense. The same goes for Outlaw. He is playing PF only because he can't defend SFs, and although that might give him a small advantage on offense, the net gain of TO at PF when you consider both ends of the floor is still zero... or negative. Gooden could change that.
Re: Get Drew Gooden What needs to stop is guaranteed contracts. If a player is waived now they still get paid by their previous team so they don't need to get paid much more than the minimum usually. If they were released and all (or most) of their contract was released w/ them they would be forced to join a team that could meet their financial needs. This would be a much fairer way to go for both teams and players.
Re: Get Drew Gooden Yea, that's true, if you want a "buyout" you should quit getting paid by that team. You hate losing so much, bye bye salary and hello vet's minimum.
Re: Get Drew Gooden A "buyout" DOES end salary payments. That's what a buyout is...buying out the remaining salary owed to the player. Instead of, for example, paying a player $10 million a year for the next 3 years ($30 million total), a team might buy the player out for $15 million up front, which frees the player to find a new salary and they have $15 million in their pocket.
Re: Get Drew Gooden I see him going to Cleveland. He's familiar with their system and I think CLE has a better chance against BOS than does SA against LAL.
Re: Get Drew Gooden No way he comes here. With Ben Wallace out Cleveland could use the depth up front. San Antonio could use a big man too, but I'd guess that Gooden still has a house in Cleveland and I suspect he'll end up there.
Re: Get Drew Gooden I think we're a couple of years away from bought-out veteran players trying to ring shop with us.
Re: Get Drew Gooden With the way the rules are currently setup players nearly always get close to their full salary after a buyout.
Re: Get Drew Gooden Yeah, because when you sign a guaranteed contract, it's hard to unilaterally get out of it. Teams can always choose not to sign guaranteed contracts, if they don't want to absorb that risk. No one puts a gun to their head. They do it because they think it will help them make money. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.
Re: Get Drew Gooden Sounds like they might sign both of them. And why not, assuming they have the roster space. barfo
Re: Get Drew Gooden Gooden is a near double double guy in 30 minutes a game when healthy. He's got a great attitude, too.
