New proposal proves Warner is a fraud

We’ve resisted labeling free-agent quarterback Kurt Warner a fraud. We’ve come close, explaining recently that his agent, Mark Bartelstein, is making Warner look like a fraud.

Based on the latest developments, we’re prepared to announce our opinion that he’s a fake and a phony and we wish we’d never laid eyes on him. (Ugh. A Grease reference? Really? I need a shower.)

At best for Warner, the fake and the phony is agent Mark Bartelstein, but since Warner has employed Bartelstein to do his bidding, the stink clings to Kurt, too.

Here’s the situation. Only days after Bartelstein implied to the world that Kurt operates on a higher moral plane than the rest of us, and thus would never use the interest of the 49ers as leverage to get more money out of the Cardinals, Warner is . . . using . . . the . . . interest . . . of . . . the 49ers . . . to get . . . more . . . money . . . out of the Cardinals.

According to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, Bartelstein has sent to the Cardinals on Warner’s behalf a two-year, $23 million proposal with $12 million in guaranteed money split between the two seasons. (As a practical matter, then, the guaranteed money is the first year’s total compensation plus $6 million, which makes it more like $17 million guaranteed.)

“He really had a great visit [to the 49ers],” Bartelstein said. “It really went well and it has really open[ed] his eyes. But Kurt’s heart is still here [in Arizona].”

Warner also is reportedly willing to give up $1 million each year if the team re-signs receiver Anquan Boldin.

In our view, that’s a meaningless gesture from a business standpoint, but undoubtedly an effort to “win the mob” and thus pressure the Cardinals into complying.

The Cardinals have the cap space — and presumably the cash — to pay Warner $23 million over two years and to give Boldin a raise. Having Warner “sacrifice” $2 million further confirms that it’s all for appearances.

Like when we was on The Ellen Degeneres Show talking about how he always picks up the dinner tab for some unsuspecting family at a restaurant. It was part of a funny story about how he unknowingly bought dinner at the Cheesecake Factory in Tampa for the family of a guy who plays for the Steelers, but the reality is that going on television and talking about his acts of charity flies in the face of Matthew 6:3.

So he’s a fraud, in our opinion. He’s a nice guy not because he wants to do nice things in the quiet, anonymous way nice things are supposed to be done, but because his motivation is to be known as a nice guy.

Nothing he ever does or says will ever change my mind on that point.

Not even if he buys me dinner at the Cheesecake Factory.
