I was planning on buying one anyway, once I'm of age (don't know when 'of age' is, but oh well).

I have to say I am disturbed by the tone of the poster's question. It seems like the kind of rant you hear on AM talk radio and on certain Web sites. "Someone is going to take our guns!!" In fact, although I don't claim to be an expert on the subject, the only blanket restrictions on gun ownership I am aware of are that felons in many states are not allowed to own guns, and during Jim Crow, for nearly a century, African-Americans were prohibited from owning firearms. The "someone is taking our guns" rant reached hysteria levels when President Obama was elected - Obama is going to take "our" (white people's) guns, the corrollary, sometimes explicitly stated, was that he was going to arm Black men. Bullshit. No one is "taking our guns" and that crap should not be the basis of such a serious choice.

I am not saying buy or don't buy; it's not my decision. But I would ask the poster to get off the Web, shut off the radio, and so some serious investigating and questioning. Because hotheadedness and guns are a really really bad combination.

    Some things to find out:

Is there real evidence your community is significantly more dangerous than it was six months ago?

Do you know how to use firearms? Are you familiar with firearm safety?

Do you know all the licensing and registration requirements in your community?

Are you prepared, in a split second, to decide if a situation is merely annoying, or life threatening? Are you prepared to stake your life or someone else's life on that decision? Ponder how many times trained police officers make the wrong decision. Are you trained?

What are your plans for this gun? Would you keep it with you 24/7? If you work for a living, your workplace almost certainly has a no weapons policy. Would you keep the gun in your car? What if it were stolen? What would your legal liabilities be in that case?

Do you plan to just keep it at home? Would it be at your side at all times? That means loaded and not locked up. Can you be sure some innocent person, especially a child, would not pick it up? Are you aware of how many children are killed and injured in gun accidents?

Would you, awakened from a sound sleep, be sure that the noise you hear is an intruder and not your spouse, child, pet, or imagination?

If you actually shot an intruder who turned out to be unarmed, what are the legal penalties you would face?

Can you be sure a malefactor could not get the gun from you and use it against you?

Are you aware of the statistical likelihood of your using your gun to prevent a crime against your person or property versus the statistical likelihood of your gun shooting the "wrong" (innocent) person?

If your concern is the safety of your home, would it be more effective, if less macho, to install strong locks and a security system?

Are you prepared to kill someone?

I don't claim to have answers. Some of this would require research, some are questions you should ask yourself. But don't buy a gun based on a rant. Guns, despite the NRA, do kill people. You are not talking about hunting or skeet shooting, you are talking about shooting a person. Get some information before you risk yours or another's life. And if you say you don't care if a bad guy/woman is killed, you should care if you do 25 years for it.

Yeah, right. We should have just stuck with clubs, knives, and spears. Much more humane way of killing someone.

Love how we fall under bad economic times and people steal TV's, Radio and BS they dont need. Why not go steal from Safeway and actually get FOOD. Heck if you are lucky you get a free trip to county and free food for days without the hassle.

Im 99.9% sure they wouldnt put a temp ban on guns but desperate time and they might do desperate measures...who knows.

    Not that Im aware of.

No, thats why I would take a class on both subjects
No, but I would before I made the purchase

If there is somebody trying to bash down my door that isnt merely annoying. If I hear somebody in the living room and I yell "Cops are coming and I have a gun" and they dont run off...its open season on them IF they try to get in my room...no friend would play a joke like that.

The only place that gun would be is unloaded under my mattress, with a clip sitting right next to it

No children are ever in my home, I obviously would re-evaluate how I store it if there was a child in the home.

Im not gonna be doing no sneak up attack..I sleep with my bedroom door locked. If I hear somebody breaking in Im staying in my room telling them Im there with a gun and cops coming. Im only shooting if they try to break down my door and dont stop after warnings.

I can protect my private property from an intruder, thats all I know

Im a really big dude if that makes a difference

    No

I have good locks, Im not putting a sec system in an apt I dont own

If they are prepared to kill/injure me...yes

If I bought a gun, I know I would use it, probably kill someone. I have a short fuse and a "kill first, ask questions later" attitude.

I'm not the one you have to answer to, or rather, to whom you need to answer.

Just to clarify, by annoying vs. life threatening, I was thinking more along the lines of someone grabs you on the street, is it an obnoxious, disgusting, but not really dangerous drunk, or a thug with designs on your purse, virtue, and life?

A male friend some years ago showed me his handgun. He thought I should get one because I'm a woman living alone (well, I had 2 cats) in Oakland. I decided not to for the exact reason that I would not have a gun in the bathroom when taking a shower, in the kitchen when cooking dinner, etc. And because I am exactly the sort of klutz who would shoot her own foot off.

Probably also has something to do with no one in my family ever owning a gun so far as I know.

Not sure who "they" are, but at any rate, if "they" put a ban on guns it could well apply to those purchased. It would also require suspending the constitution.

I don't know current law where you live but I do know of an actual case, it was in the news, where a man broke into a home and was shot and killed by the homeowner. The intruder was unarmed and in another room so it was not considered the homeowner or his family were in imminent danger. He was convicted of manslaughter. You can argue pro or con, but do need to find out what the law is in these cases.

At least you seem to be taking this seriously.

Killing someone isn't humane, no matter what you use.

Anyway, you would be MUCH less likely to kill someone if you had to beat them to death and be soaked in their blood and brains and teeth.

Guns are just Killing for Dummies with a basic point-and-click interface. It's rude.

There is only 1 way I'd kill people and that's on a giant T-Rex made of steel and malaysian house cat.

Nicely handled by the organizer. Shame that a guy who'd done so much to help so many kids learn to hunt had to go and destroy his reputation like that.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of shotguns. They make a loud noise and if I were in a shootout defending my home, I like my odds.

I'll always remember years ago my new English wife heard something rustling downstairs. She woke me up and told me to go take a look. She says, "Take that coin jar in case you need a weapon." I look at her like she's nuts. My shotgun was leaning against the coin jar. "Oh, that's even better," she says. "You can really hit him over the head with that."

I love the woman, but sometimes we see things so differently...

Make sure if you live in an apartment building that you put hollow points in your weapon. The last thing you want to do is fire at an intruder and hit your neighbor instead.

While I believe in the 2nd Amendment, I think you also have an obligation to educate yourself about guns.

Ah, learn something new all the time...Are hollow points allowed? I thought they were banned but I could be 100% wrong

If you kill someone who breaks in, you could still get into a lot of trouble. I really wouldn't want to do that. Keep some good pepper spray or bear mace handy. Mace them in the face, cut them on the arm with a knife, and tell em they try anything, it'll be their dick and nuts next. Then call the cops.
