Broncos distancing themselves from Marshall?

Although the domestic violence charges against Brandon Marshall have been dropped, it looks like the incident will still be a tremendous financial burden on the wide receiver.

The Denver Post indicates that the Denver Broncos will hold off on an extension for Marshall, whose 2009 salary is set at $2.2 million. This does not take into account any fines the NFL will levy against Marshall nor his lost wages if he is suspended, but biggest hit will be that to his potential future earnings. T.J. Houshmandzadeh signed a contract with the Seattle Seahawks for $8 million per season, and Bernard Berrian signed a six-year, $43.4 million pact with the Minnesota Vikings before 2008.

With those figures in mind, Marshall would've easily been above the $9 million per season threshold in any extension. Unfortunately for Marshall, because the NFL and the Player's Assocation are currently re-negotiating the collective bargaining agreement, he will be a restricted free agent following 2009 as opposed to an unrestricted free agent. In this case, the Broncos will still essentially control Marshall since there are a number of hoops through which another team would have to jump to pry him away. Therefore, the Broncos can continue to pay Marshall well under his market value through 2010, and then decide whether his on-field play is worth the off-field infractions.

While the Broncos may be having second thoughts on an extension for Marshall, they are still in the hunt for the services of Terrell Owens and with two dominating wide receivers at his disposal, recent trade bait Jay Cutler would certainly be much more of a happy camper. Like a parent dealing with a temper tantrum, the Broncos might need to buy Cutler a new toy.
