Josh Howard's absence could be lengthy

The possibility exists that an injured left ankle could keep Josh Howard out of the lineup through the end of the month.

Howard is not with the Mavericks on a crucial four-game road trip that begins tonight in Phoenix. He remained in Dallas on Monday along with trainer Casey Smith to review the results of his latest tests. The specialist advised that Howard needed still more tests to determine the severity of the injury and the best course of action.

No timetable has been established by the club other than to concede Howard won't play against the Suns or Wednesday night in Portland. Mavericks officials are hopeful he will be back sooner rather than later. Yet they temper that optimism with the knowledge this injury has plagued Howard for much of the season and could keep him sidelined for
weeks rather than days.

Howard first sprained the ankle in mid-November, an injury that required a boot and kept him off the court for 11 games. He injured the ankle again in last week's loss to Oklahoma City and sat out the second half.

Howard returned two nights later to score 29 points and grab seven rebounds in an emotional win over San Antonio. His limp was noticeable at times during the game and he aggravated the injury again in Thursday's loss to New Orleans.

Howard did not play against Washington. He has missed 18 games this season -- 12 with the ankle and six with a sprained left wrist.

"We're trying to get to the bottom of Josh's pain as quickly as possible,'' said Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks president of basketball operations. "Although there's no timetable at this point, Josh and our medical staff are working feverishly to get him back in uniform.

"We all know how important every game is down the stretch.''
