Hell that could be what we need. Rich Brooks got the traction for the program. Bellotti made it matter... but cant seem to get over that last hurdle. Maybe Kelly will get us into that next step as a program. I forgot about Brown though. That could be a scary RB lineup with Blount and Brown this year.. then Brown and LaMichael James for 2 more years!!

There are only 3 divisions in each conference, and the winners of each are the top 3 seeds based on record. A caveat, however, is that homecourt advantage is determined by record and not by seed, meaning a 3rd seed with a bad record could not have HCA against a 6th seed with a better record.

Or at least that is how I understand it.

It was Dallas and San Antonio, and it was dumb of the NBA to change the rule since the NFL does just fine with the old rule and winning a division should mean something. Actually, I think that a second place team in a division with a better record than a division winner is actually seeded higher than the division winner.

It wasn't true though. The three division winners PLUS THE NON-DIVISION WINNER WITH THE BEST RECORD are seeded by record.

Meaning that the winner of the NW could end up the 4th seed while New Orleans gets the 3rd seed based on record.

    Confusing as hell.

He explained the basis premise right but the facts are wrong in some spots. A division winner is guaranteed a top four seed only and not a top three seed; so, if Houston finished with a record better than the Northwest Division winner but behind San Antonio they would get the third seed, and the Northwest Division winner would get the fourth seed. If a division winner in fourth place has a worse record than the fifth seed then the fifth seed gets home-court advantage. Please see Utah/Houston series from recent years.

Winning division just means you are guaranteed top 4 spot, Utah didn't have Homecourt the last 2 years despite winning the Northwest

Who needs home-court when facing a Houston team that has a 7'6 center and several tall forwards who can't secure a defensive rebound in three times in Houston in game 7? Psh.

Thats the one you are right.. it was when and I think it was Dallas and San Antonio.. cause they met in the 2nd round while they had the top 2 records I think.. as opposed to them meeting in the WCF.

Noted. I still think it's BS that Stern did this, though.

This is not true. A division winner is guaranteed a top 4 seed and yes, msg, we would have the 4 seed if the season ended today.

You don't get HCA for a top 4 seed though. You must have a top 4 record.

The biggest reason I think they changed the system was because of what happened with Memphis and the Clippers. The Nuggets had locked up the 6th seed but weren't a very good team overall. Memphis and the Clippers were battling for the 5th seed. The winner of the 5th seed had to play Dallas and not have HCA while the 6th seed got to play Denver and with HCA. Consequently, the Grizzlies and Clippers both tried to lose a game between each other late in the season. The Clippers succeeded in losing and got the favorable matchup. As a result, the Clippers reached the second round while Memphis got swept in the first.

Yknow- Dallas plays 8 of their last 12 at home and Utah plays a brutal schedule down the stretch. I would not be surprised if Utah finished with the 8th seed and got swept by the Lakers. Would be funny if Utah beat L.A. though.
