Steve Nash's brother Martin plays for the Whitecaps, and for Canada.

I just don't see how it works in terms of an economic plus for the city.

International scouts booking hotel rooms, going to restaurants, renting cars, etc.
International family members, fans booking hotel rooms, etc.
International sponsorship, press media coverage, etc. They will book rooms, etc.
MLS just doesn't get just local USA soccer talent but worldwide attention.

not really. it'll be good for the city though, Portland would be a good environment for a team. Better than LA (who has two already...Chivas (for the mexicans) and Galaxy (for everyone else).

Economists have debated the economic impact of a professional sports team, and it runs the gamut from Zimbalist at Smith who believes they never make money and Abrevaya at Purdue who tries to prove they're huge moneymakers.

There's too much compelling data each way, but I think it helps only in the softest marketing sense, where people see your city on TV and know your town through your team.

The Woolwich Wanderers = fail. Plastic ass fake fans. Might as well root for the Lakers and Yankees as well.

Congrats to Portland though. The Timbers deserve it.

Best fans in all of sports are soccer fans! Wish we had a Blazer Army! I went to a match this past summer in Dundee,Scotland vs FC Barcelona. Stadium held about 12,000. Goosebumps, the crowd was amazing. I grew up going to Timber games with my parents. Saw Pele play in the late 70's! This is great for my city!

Just imagine if Arsenal had soccer fans and not a 60,000 seat Library.

It's about fucking time. Soccer City USA without a top level team for this long? Time to get some regalia.

What does "FC" stand for? Football Club? Futbol Club? I'm a soccer idiot.

However, I think it's cool we landed a MLS team. I've been wanting to go to a Timbers game to see what's up with this Timbers Army buzz. It sounds right up my alley. Drunk, loud, obnoxious, fanatic. That is me at every Blazers home game, so maybe I could transition right in to the Timbers Army. If my liver can keep up, that is....

Looks like the Sounders had great success in their first home game. I just looked at the pics on seattletimes.com. Looks like a blast! I could get in to this.

I hate that the Sounders and the Timbers both wear green. The Sounders green is that annoying neon green the Seahawks have adopted. I hate that color, even though I'm a rabid Seahawks fan. The Timbers green is better, for sure.

I'm kind of stoked for this.

    Yes.

    Timbers matches are great fun.

If Portland is spending a dime on this nonsense I predict an entirely new City Council next election.
