Been about 8 years since I was on a court, and I was depressed to see how badly I shot it at first. Over the last month or so it's coming back to me. I'm pretty much limited to a left handed hook shot, a decent midrange jumper, and a nice little up and under I can pull off on the dribble or in the post. Kind of weird in that I dribble almost exclusively with my left hand, but shoot everything but the hook with my right. (That hooks works with either hand.) I'm mostly an earth-bound screener who knows his role, defends and sets a decent pick. Mostly play under the hoop, but at 6 feet a lot of it is just hustle and shoving my fat ass into people. Kind of depressing to think about who I compare to--Mark Madsen is the best I got. Maybe a little Zach Randolph in there too, with my body type and the ambidexterous hook. I used to love fighting under the hoop in my mid-20's....you don't see a lot of 35 year old dudes do that much. I wonder if it'll last....
I'm pretty similar at 6'1". Play very good defense, set picks. Sometimes can knock down a three, but get most of my points on offensive rebound-put backs. I read the ball extremely well off the rim and as a result surprise people with how well I crash the boards. Pisses me off when some guy who is just really strong tries to use his weight and elbows to push me out of the way, which happens sometimes. Regardless, I'm pretty good at guarding players taller than me, and used to guard guys 6'5" in the post pretty effectively. I forget what my "wingspan" is, but I think it was at least 6'4"...maybe more I can't remember. So yeah, I'm a hustle player more than anything else. Wish I was better at creating with the ball and getting into the lane. I compare to Boris Diaw, with Rodman's knack for where the ball would bounce off the rim ;-)
I'm a driver, quick and low the ground. Every once in awhile I'll shot a jumper to keep the defender honest. Good defender as I can keep anyone in front of me and take a lot of pride in that, but I have a problem with people shooting over me since I'm only 5'4, however most of the people I play against aren't much taller then me so it doesn't come up much. I would say Earl Boykins except for playing defense thing.
Isaiah Thomas/Bobby Hurley in his college years. I'm the scrappy guy who D's you up hard, will take it to the hole with reckless abandon and can spot up and hit jumpers. I look for the pass always before I shoot, will set hard screens even in pickup games and hates it when other players don't make an effort to move without the ball. I'm either hot and hitting everything, or so far off that I realize nothing will go down that day. As I'm typing this I have a heating pad on my back from 3 hours of pickup games yesterday.
Yeah, I guess that could work to. I guess I'm stuck in "I love Boris" mode from around 2005 when he had that breakout year with the Suns (and helped my Fantasy team). But those could work to. Depending on who I'm playing against/with, I can handle the ball some, and am a good passer who sees the open/cutting man and gets the ball to the right spot. But my limited ability to drive and create doesn't help me utilize my passing ability.
lol. I'm feeling a little better about Mark Madsen. I'm just waiting for somebody to say, "Brandon Roy." Dude better have some footage.
I'm 6-foot-5, 210 lbs but I'm unbelievably soft down low. I can get outrebounded by 5 footers because I'm not motivated enough to go get them. I also play incredibly bad defense unless I'm playing against somebody who is really good. On offense, I'm constantly in motion, running off of screens/trying to shake my defender. I'm a total slasher with a weak jumpshot. I can't really think of a good comparison.
I have become a lot like Ben Gordon. Maybe, partly because I try to mimic parts of his game. But really because since I've been to college, the people who play in pickup games in college are just so damn strong. So I've been playing more on the perimeter. Pretty much I can shoot really well, can make creative shots, pass pretty well, can't dribble worth crap, have shotty perimeter defense, know how to play good interior defense, can lay it up with both hands, can post up smaller/equal sized players with ease, have left/right hook shots, deceptively good shotblocker because I'm well timed. I get up my shots every game, and usually will score at least 4 points a games, probably an average around 6, and sometimes in double digits. (We play pickup games by 1's and 2's to 16 here.). It's a big difference from high school, when you'll be playing with freshman, sophomores mixed in, and even a lot of juniors who just aren't that physically developed. In high school I dont' know exactly what style I played. I wasn't quite a big man height wise, but I was often at center, because I was a ferocious rebounder and could get a lot of points off offensive rebounders, while still shooting up threes, and could just drive by giving a hard dribble, picking up my dribble and going hard into the defenders. All of the driving and interior stuff don't work anymore against bigger players. Now when I drive, it'll be beacuse I put a nice move that freed me, not just by pure strength. Will need to work on my strength if I ever want to bring those parts of my game back again. But the shooter role definitely has it's perks (you get to shoot for one....). If I could ever get my handles down I could be an effective point guard becaues I see the court well. But I don't think my handles will ever even be decent.
I'm always the designated set shooter on my IM/rec teams. I'm pretty automatic from the outside if left open. Even had a few of my opponents refer to me as "JJ" (Redick). All that said, if you fly out at me, or make me put the ball on the floor, I'm going to turn it over.
Well I may not have his game (unfortunately) but I do share a birthday with Brandon Roy. We need to rip it up sometime.
Not sure who I would say my game resembles... I play pretty well with 1-on-1 isolation. I can drive equally well left or right, but finish better with the right. I like penetrating and looking for the big-man to roll to the hoop for a layin after I draw them in. I am 6', 185lb and can dunk, so usually I find that if somebody is quick enough to stay in front of my on the drive, I am bigger than them and can take them in the post or just jump shoot over them. If they are big enough to guard me in the post, most likely I can drive past them. I HATE getting scored on. I actually like playing defense, and take it as a personal challenge to hold my man scoreless for the game. I usually get quite a few blocks since I can get up higher than one would think, being only 6'. The last league I played in, our team made it into the playoffs with a 6-2 record. The one game that I wasn't able to play, we lost in the playoffs, shutout 21-0. Dang, sorry if the above sounded cocky and conceited, as reading it now, is sounds that way.
An out of shape Shawn Kemp. I know what I want to do but I lack the athleticism/quickness/jumping that I once had. Really good passer and good rebounder. Actually, I haven't played in a LONG time. I'm in better shape than last time I was on the court, so I'd probably just be rusty, rather than feeling bloated and coke-addled... Ed O.
