Bears reportedly contact Broncos about Cutler

Count the Bears among the 10 teams that have contacted the Denver Broncos about quarterback Jay Cutler -- if you believe the number is that low.

Yahoo! Sports reported Wednesday that the Bears have reached out to the Broncos about Cutler, who has requested a trade. The extent of that discussion is unknown, but it's evident that general manager Jerry Angelo -- to use his pet phrase -- is doing his due diligence.

Angelo said after last season that he was ''fixated'' on the position. In eight years running the Bears, he has rolled through 11 starting quarterbacks and has Kyle Orton entering a make-or-break season in the final year of his contract.

But Angelo isn't about to say if the conversation was a dalliance or a request to keep the Bears informed if the Broncos start taking offers.

''I do not comment on players who are under contract with other teams,'' Angelo said Wednesday.

Of course not -- that would be tampering. Broncos coach Josh McDaniels, speaking earlier this week at the owners meetings in Dana Point, Calif., declared every which way that Cutler is his quarterback.

The situation erupted days into free agency when Cutler learned the Broncos were proposing to move him in a three-team trade to acquire Matt Cassel, whom McDaniels coached with New England. Multiple league sources have said the Patriots weren't happy when McDaniels signed away wide receiver Jabar Gaffney, and they wound up trading Cassel to Kansas City -- a division rival of Denver -- and former New England executive Scott Pioli.

The New York Jets, Tampa Bay (where Cutler was headed in the three-team deal), Minnesota and Detroit also are reported to have had interest in Cutler. One AFC coach said Tuesday that the Broncos' statements of commitment to Cutler this week were only measures to drive up the price on a blockbuster deal.

Orton and Bears coach Lovie Smith did their best to ignore the speculation at minicamp last week. If anyone can be unfazed by a seemingly overwhelming distraction, it's probably Orton, who is confident he can prove to the franchise he's worthy of a long-term commitment.

The next move probably will be Cutler's. Any package to acquire him likely would require multiple high draft picks -- possibly two first-rounders -- and maybe a quarterback. Any team acquiring the 25-year-old might solve its quarterback situation for the next 10 years.

Think what that would mean for the Bears. In the last 155 regular-season games -- a span of less than 10 seasons -- they've changed starting quarterbacks 35 times.

It's about time some good news comes from Angelo. I'd love to see Cutler in a Bears uniform. If we could do that, maybe that might attract some of the better available wide receivers like Torry Holt.

I'd me more than happy to give up Orton and our first for Cutler.
