What was that mumbo-jumbo crap LeBron just led heading into a 4th Quarter timeout?!? Pre-game frivolities are one thing, but that (at that point of the game) was waaay over the top, IMO.
As I had mentioned, doing this crap during the game is wrong. In this case, it could even be viewed as taunting. The NFL already has various rules on this. I wouldn't doubt the NBA follows suit in some manner, as well. OTOH, it's LeBron?
I can't believe its still going on...the pre game shit is out of hand too. What's next, is LeBron going to come out on the court in a cape and crown?
Let's not forget that the NBA is entertainment mroe than anything else. If you're looking for purely basketball for basketball's sake go watch the Olympics...or the NCAA Tournament where players are playing for the honor of their school. Is it out of line with LBJ throws up the chalk into the air? I personally don't like the fact that players in the NFL can't do creative touchdown celebrations. It shows some creativity and I think it adds to the fun. Certainly there is a time and a place, and taunting a team that's really down isn't great. But we're talking about professionals here, not 10 year old children who need to be protected against having their feelings and confidence hurt by installing things like a Mercy rule. At some point you do have to ask...where is the stepping point where the NBA becomes the WWF/WCF (whatever). Like you mentioned about what if someone came out wearing a cape. Valid point. But I haven't seen anything too much that really indicates that being an issue. So far I think the little stunts have been fun and amusing. Sort of like "putting on a skit" or doing a little something comedic. I like it. If you strap down the regulations too hard I think it'll take away from the mass appeal of the league. Basketball purists may not like it, but the NBA isn't really designed for you. It's designed to appeal to the masses, and we like to be entertained, even if that mean detracting from the game being about basketball, and more about the show. Just how it is.
When LBJ pulled that stuff in the 4th Quarter, I wasn't necessarily thinking about my opinion on the matter as much as was thinking how the Mavs might have taken it. I mean, they were getting thoroughly blown out at the time, so it was kind of an adding insult to injury gig.
just wait, if they keep on one-upping each other, eventually someone will break out the cape..... I mean look at the fucking dunk contest....kryto-nate vs. superman. lame.
