L.J. Singing A Different Tune

In February, Chiefs running back Larry Johnson made a public plea to get out of Kansas City.

Now, Johnson has a different attitude.

His new agent, Peter Schaffer, tells Bill Williamson of ESPN.com that Johnson is interested in playing for the Chiefs, given the presence of a new regime.

“Everyone has an open mind about this and we continue to communicate,” Schaffer said. “I think the Chiefs know that Larry is a very talented young man. I think everyone is looking to moving forward.”

On the surface, it makes sense for Johnson to stick around, because he’s due to make more money over the next couple of years than any other team would give him on the open market. At a deeper level, it’s against Schaffer’s interests to see the current deal honored, since a new agent doesn’t get paid until the player gets a new contract.

That said, it could be that Schaffer realizes the Chiefs would be inclined to trade or cut Johnson if they can assess the situation without Johnson trying to force them to do that which they probably would choose to do.
