That's my thought. I don't see how he can function in the triangle since he's not a great shooter, and he's a selfish douche.
Rodman was worse. PJax managed to get him to contribute in a role position (albeit starting, as AI would for the Lakers) for 3 championship seasons. This is a guy who took his shoes off when taken out of a game while playing for the Spurs.
You don't understand though Denny, it doesn't matter if Phil could get him to co-exist, it's a matter of he does not fit in with this offense. It's built around ball movement, and when he gets the ball, movement stops. He would also need to be a reliable jump shooter in order to play the PG position in the triangle, something he is not. He's also been a selfish ballhog his entire career, and I don't see that stopping. He's not worth it. He ruined the Pistons this season, and he wouldn't do any good on the Lakers either. He is simply not a player that can play in that system, plain and simple.
How does ball movement stop with a guy who gets 6.2 APG career, and 7 (or more) the past 5 full seasons? His FGA/gm was 24 in 06-07, but declined to the point he was scoring 26.4PPG on 19 FGA at a 46% clip when he had teammates who could score on their own (Melo, for one). With Detroit this season, 17.4 PPG on 14.7 FGA. Maybe he doesn't need to shoot as much as you'd think at this point in his career. Fisher shoots 43% (but 41% 3pt) on 9 FGA/game. Iverson in a bad situation has a 15.9 PER. One season removed from a 20.9 PER. Fisher has never had a 15 PER in his career, and is at 12.6 this season.
Again though, Iverson is NOT A SHOOTER. That's what they ask for out of their PG. Iverson is a slasher, plain and simple. He's not going to consistently make open jump shots the way Fish does, especially from three point range. And his APG is completely misleading. Anyone who has the ball in their hands that much should be getting a good amount of assists. It doesn't take away from the fact that he has and always will be a selfish, me first player. To point this out, note his most recent tirade. I don't want that kind of an attitude on my team, ever. In order for him to succeed, and you can look at his past successes as proof, he NEEDS to be the focal point of the offense. In Denver, he was the secondary option behind 'Melo, and where did they go? First round exits each year. In Detroit, he has to play "team ball", something he's not accustomed to, and how good are they since he came there? Awful, to put it kindly. The only place he has ever had success was in Philly, where the offense was built around him. If it's not built around him, he's not going to have success. You can argue this all you want Denny, but he's simply not a good fit in the triangle. He doesn't shoot well enough from the outside and he's not a willing enough passer to defer to Kobe or Pau as much as he would be asked to.
Iverson needs the ball in his hands a ridiculous amount of time to rack up those assists. He's been mostly inefficient for his career. A lot of pointguards are better than whatever LA has, that's not saying much. It is impressive LA has been that dominant with such below average players at the 1.
That's because we run the triangle offense, and all we really need at PG is someone who can hit the open shots. PG isn't that important, but of course you already knew that huevon
Nobody is going to take a cancer, who needs the ball to be effective. Iverson is at the twilight of his career and he's still bitching about starting. No team is going to let him start if he wants a ring
Do you really think Iverson cares about a ring? I'm beginning to think he just cares more about his individual accolades than getting a title. If he gave a rats ass about winning, he wouldn't be bitching about coming off the bench.
Ron Harper wasn't much of a shooter in the triangle though. Not saying AI would work, but not every point guard who has played for PJax has been a shooter (most were shooters though). You're saying that the triangle needs guys like Steve Kerr, BJ Armstrong, etc. I don't necessarily disagree, but again, Harper wasn't much of a shooter, so the triangle can work with a point guard who isn't a dead-eye shooter.
You are very correct, but this is a different version of the triangle than what Phil has run in the past. So while it doesn't necessarily always need a shooter at the point, the version of the triangle that Phil is running in LA really does require the PG to be a shooter. So, unless he were to change the offense (which I can't see happening since it fits so well with this team, especially when they're at full strength), there's no way AI could fit in.
