As part of our trek back to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, we will be heading from Calistoga, CA...up the gorgeous Hy 1 and through the Redwoods. While there, we're planning to spend a night in Ferndale, (Fortuna), CA (BTW, Ferndale is where The Majestic was filmed) and was wondering if any of you had visited through there? We're plan to spend the night at this lovely looking B&B: http://www.victorianvillageinn.com/index.htm Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! ABM
Lots of tourist traps on that road. And its dissapointing to think about how these giant trees once covered an immense area. Still worth a good look though. Take your time. Go walking in the woods. Gaze up at the treetops. Those trees are huge. Make sure you stop at the drive thru tree and the tram.
Haven't been in years but many times in my childhood as my Dad's family lived in Eureka/Arcata. Always went to the Trees of Mystery: http://www.treesofmystery.net/ Man has that changed. No tram 40 years ago. Also the Prehistoric Gardens near Port Orford, OR: http://www.roadtripusa.com/routes/pacificcoast/oregon/or_prehistoricgardens.html These are great sites for finding interesting things to see and do: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/ http://www.roadtripusa.com/index.html
Not sure when you're travelling, but if it's around Memorial Day watch out for strage vehicles on the road. The incredibly scenic coast and valley roads come together further north, amidst the mighty redwood trees of Humboldt County, where another wacky race shows off the individualistic energy California is famous for. Held each Memorial Day weekend, the Kinetic Sculpture Race is a three-day celebration of people-power, in which contestants pedal, push, and paddle creatively designed mobile sculptures between the towns of Arcata and Ferndale, racing along country roads and across sandy beaches and chilly bays.
Cool stuff! Thanks for all of that. Definitely will check out all that we can as time allows. Will be going through there on May 12th, 13th. Thanks again!
