Paulson has the Mayor in his back pocket (not sure why). I dont believe much of anything released from the mayors office in regards to this right now.
What's there to "believe" in what I posted? The mayor's office is getting the word out about a development open house on the subject and sharing two of the renderings with the public. Since you're so passionate about this subject, I take it you'll be at the open house and can let us know what happens? -Pop
I assume I see paths in the sketches but I sure wished they included the east/west parking garages as well as the streets in the design.
I wish they didn't use sketches made by a 3rd grader. I mean, seriously, who drew that crap? Is it really too much to ask for someone drawing a concept like that to draw a straight line? I understand it isn't exactly a professional proposal being used to attract whatever, but I've drawn many a baseball stadium in my years, as well as surrounding areas, and I at least had the ability to draw the line straight. This looks like it was hurriedly sketched, or doodled during a press conference by a bored staff member.
I don't know enough about the business to understand why, but it seems like all preliminary architectural sketches look like that. Is it what the cool kids do, or is it really a necessary part of the design process to prepare something that looks like that? Is it marketing? Tradition? Nobody uses a computer for this? barfo
I suppose so. I just remember some preliminary sketches that were up, I believe, on the MLB to Portland websites, and they looked really nice. This looks like my niece scribbled it on her Red Robin menu with their allotment of 4 crayons. Ah well. Maybe they do do it intentionally. Who knows. Maybe it is the cool thing to do. Just doesn't seem like it would take a ton more effort to clean it up a bit, so you can more easily tell what's going on. They have the idea in place. No better concept sketches? Maybe I'm just nitpicking, because I like the idea, and what to see better images of the possibilities available in the area.
The architect refers to the place where the Blazers play as the "Rose Gardens". And they're talking about a field where the lines are 310' and 330'? WTF?
310 ... yes. They'd need to have some sort of high wall like the Green Monster in Boston or the high home run line in Houston. 330 ... no. That's puts it right on par with most of the minor league parks in the country. Also 350 to straightaway center field is WAY too short. That needs to be closer to 400'. 380 at a minimum. But we have to remember these are preliminary drawings. I'm actually surprised they even put that bit of detail in the sketches. -Pop
380 to Right? 350 to Center? 310 to Left? Those are crazy dimensions. 380 would be longer than any MLB park. 350 is about 50 feet too short and 310 is equivalent to the Green Monster or the RF Wall at PacBell in SF. Although the wall in SF quickly goes out to 421 and Fenway is 420 in right center. I wonder if the Padres or other major league clubs would want to keep Portland as an affiliate if the field has such crazy dimensions. All the righties would try to pull everything and the lefties would try and go the other way all the time. Not to mention how all pitching prospects would get killed.
I think we determined 380 is actually 330 (chalk it up to bad penmanship). As for the rest of the dimensions, yeah I'm guessing the people who know what the dimensions of a ballpark should be didn't have a lot of input into the discussions. These are preliminary drawings. It's not like they are breaking ground tomorrow. Someone will bring this up and it will be addressed before they even get near the point of the first shovel. -Pop
