Let's say the Blazers somehow managed to lose their final two games, then were swept in the playoffs. Would you still consider this a "successful" season? Think about it...relate back to the beginning of the season.....and then answer honestly. Thanks.
Yes. I would be disappointed because I think this team can do better than that - but they are still young enough that I would still consider it a successful season. If anything - it will teach them that they have to play night-in. night-out for HCA.
I say no because of how well they are playing right now it would mean a major meltdown happened, which I consider a failure. My expectations are high and I think that 52 wins so far is incredible, but I know the team is capable of more.
I wonder if KP would still stay the course......and not make a major trade (such as one involving LMA and Bosh)? I'd tend to say yes, because I believe the original team goal was to make the playoffs, and they've done that. Seriously, though? My scenario ain't gonna happen!!
The season is already a success to me. I'd be disappointed if they lost their remaining games, because I think they are good enough to win both, but it wouldn't change what they've already accomplished.
Losing two games is hardly a meltdown, especially when one of the losses would be to a good team. I think they should win both games, but sometimes teams run into a bad patch. This would be bad timing for a bad patch, but not a meltdown.
Don't forget that the scenario ABM laid out also included also being swept in the playoffs. Considering how far we have come, I would be very disappointed if we don't win any more games.
Anyone who doesn't see that this season is an astounding success, right here and right now, is completely missing the point.
Yeah, fair enough, I missed the "swept" bit. I guess I'd say that they had a successful regular season, but not a successful playoffs. I think most of us expected, before the season began, at least one playoff game win.
To echo andalusian's comments, I'd be disappointed too, but that doesn't mean the season would not have been a magnificent success. And contrary to Sabas' comments, I don't think a playoff sweep is necessarily indicative of a meltdown, especially considering that it could very possibly be at the hands of the Rockets (if SA wins the SW division), whom we barely beat a single time this year.
I know we all agreed at the start of the season that just making the playoffs would qualify as "success," but that was then... Heck, 47 wins is all it took this season, and most of us had the Blazers figured for at least 50. Now I won't be happy unless we at least take our opponent to the brink... Making the 2nd round would be "over and above" at this point. I gotta add that those two victories over the hated smogshow kinda guarantee that this season is at least a qualified success, no matter what else happens...
I think, at a minimum, that I'd be happy if we landed at least one playoff win. I'd be VERY happy if we advanced past the first; that would be a superb accomplishment. iWatas
It would be like a killer movie that had an awesome beginning, rollercoaster plot, a huge buildup, then crappy ending. I would be bummed on what could have been. but would be ok because I know its got many many sequels.
Based on what we knew 6 months ago, you would call it a success. Based on the current situation, I would call it merely acceptable. In hindsight, this team was good enough to win the division, and at least good enough to be competitive in the play-offs. We blew too many winnable games to reach the first goal, but the second is still in reach. Getting swept in the 1st round would be a bad way to end a good season.
we currently are plus 2 in the win column with my prediction. I'm pleased with the team as a whole, still have some growing to do, but we are looking better and better. Next year we are going to be a Beast in the West.
It would be a disappointing end to the season. However, still a successful season. Actually, still a fantastic season.
Even if we were to get swept in the first round we would successfully identify areas that would obviously need to be addressed in the off-season. There's no such thing as failure this year.
The playoffs are a completely different beast. IIRC, Blake is the only player on the team that has ever been in the playoffs. Because of that I'm saying it wouldn't make the whole season a failure if we lost these last two games and got swept in the playoffs. The point of this year was to make it into the playoffs so we can learn from the experience. A year from now that won't be the case. I expect some playoff wins next season. Next season I'd be disappointed if we didn't make it past the first round.
