That's too bad, I guess we view this differently. Clearly I wasn't alone in thinking it was harmless to clap for a player before the game starts, but we'll never have any proof one way or another. I bet if I cheer every good play Brooks makes tomorrow, he won't have as good of a game. So either that proves that mean cheering more makes him play worse, or that it has no impact one way or another.
I wasn't the one that said it makes an impact on the players. I just think it's FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG to show ANY love to the opposing team during the Playoffs. Just a philosophical difference, I guess.
That's spot on. When their perimeter players would drive and get past our defense, Aldridge had to slide over, and the way they spaced the floor made it extremely difficult to rotate over. Even when we did, we had guys like Roy and Rudy trying to defend Scola about 4' from the hoop. It is very difficult to front when teams have good outside shooters, and near impossible when everyone else can't play good one-on-one defense.
Oh, my bad, that was Nate. I didn't think I was showing any love to the Rockets, just one player on their team. If you don't think it makes a difference in the game, then I don't see why it should bother you. Obviously it does, and we don't agree, but that's ok.
I have no problem with people clapping, but I was upset, because I was hoping the Let's Go Blazers! chant would drown out their starting lineup. But people stopped. Oh well.
You're right. There's no way to know for sure, but I think it goes against everything that playoff basketball stands for. You want a hostile environment for the opposing team. How hostile can it be when you're giving a rousing ovation for one of their starters and their head coach?
Unfortunately (or fortunately?) that's always been Portland to give a nice applause in the starting lineups to players with local ties unless they really burned bridges here.
by the way if we front yao, he shouldnt be getting open looks...a defender should rotate and be in position to take a charge or deflect the pass.
Front Yao should prevent him from getting open looks. However, it will take away Joel/Greg from helping in the middle.
Totally, but if I were a Beaver fan, I'd probably still be bitter about being clownstomped at home in the Civil War with the Rose Bowl on the line as well. GRRRRR, it's the Duck fans' fault Brooks played well! He got some cheers from some Duck fans!
Interesting thread. 3 pages to discover that someone is mad they pissed away $300 for a lower bowl ticket to the game, with repeated jabs at fellow Blazer fans who are also Duck fans for simply applauding a player who meant a lot to the U of O program. Stay classy.
I love the Ducks but neither Rick or Aaron got any love from me on this night. They are the enemy, and you don't, just don't cheer for the opposition in the playoffs. We boo'ed the hell out of Ariza and it got in his head. The RG needs to be hostile in the playoffs, not happy go lucky. Got a ton of respect for both guys off the court, but onces its game time, is "who the hell are you again?"
Yao got booed and didn't miss a shot. Karl Malone, Kobe, and Shaq all got booed and took it to us. Citing Trevor Ariza having a sub-par game as proof booing impacts players doesn't prove anything. You guys think that Brooks was getting cheered all game or something, he wasn't.
It's a pathetic red herring. Applauding Brooks at the intro had literally nothing to do with how he played. It really just comes across as sour grapes. Houston beat the crap out of the Blazers. Period. Whining about fans seems petty.
It's nice to know that someone else here realizes that giving a hand to someone like Brooks, Adelman, AC Green, Brent Barry, etc is classy and doesn't hurt the Blazers chances of winning.
A friend of mine who is a Blazer fan played at OSU with Brent Barry and got tickets from Barry for the game last night. I imagine he even went out to dinner with him after the game. How Dare He!!! I'm going to call him and tell him that he is the reason the Blazers lost.
Yeah, because those words are in one of my posts, "the reason the blazers lost is because..." PG, you're hilarious. I'm pretty sure "the reason the blazers lost" is because Houston shot 80% in the first quarter. That doesn't change the fact that fans shouldn't be cheering for the other team. Kobe played high school ball in Philly, yet that city boos him mercilessly when he comes to town.
If it doesn't impact the outcome of the game, why does it bother you? Does it ruin the experience for you? I can't imagine something so little really bothering you.
