Romero and BJ placed on DL

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays pitching staff took a couple of hits Thursday, when the club was forced to place closer B.J. Ryan and rookie left-hander Ricky Romero on the 15-day disabled list due to injuries.
Ryan, who blew his second save of the season on Wednesday night, has been shelved with muscle tightness in his left trapezius and Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said there is currently no established timetable for his return. Left-hander Scott Downs will likely be Toronto's primary closer going forward.
Romero has been bothered by a strained left oblique for more than a week -- he first felt pain in his side after an unfortunate sneeze prior to his start in Minnesota on April 14. Romero's stay on the shelf is retroactive to Monday, a day before the lefty's most recent outing, meaning he is eligible to return from the DL on May 5.
The Blue Jays will announce subsequent roster moves to replace Ryan and Romero on their active roster on Friday. At Triple-A Las Vegas, right-hander Jeremy Accardo is a potential candidate to be promoted to Toronto's bullpen and left-hander Brett Cecil will likely be called up to move into Romero's slot on the starting staff.
Ryan, 33, appeared in six games this season and allowed seven runs on eight hits with five walks and four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. The stopper's latest performance -- three runs allowed in one inning against the Rangers on Wednesday -- pushed his ERA up to 11.12 and marked the second time he has yielded three runs in an outing this season.
The early woes are a continuation of the struggles Ryan experienced throughout Spring Training. Gaston expressed concern of the closer's pitch velocity during the preseason, but Ryan had shown improvement in that area over the past month. Now, the main problem has been Ryan's ability to consistently locate his pitches.
Gaston said he didn't learn of Ryan's injury until after the pitcher's performance on Wednesday and the manager wasn't sure if the problem dated back to the spring. Ryan underwent Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery on his left elbow in May 2007 for an injury that appears to be unrelated to his current issue.

Fuck man, why can't we stay healthy. But, we are playing well, so lets hope the team can keep it together.
