http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/polling?event_id=3826 for once I'm in complete agreement with the voters STOMP
I really think the intentional foul needs to be re-instituted. I mean, I guess that's basically a flagrant 1, but maybe an intentional could be a free throw and the ball, or three free throws if it is an instance of a shooting foul such as on Brad Miller. Less than a flagrant, but more than a regular "going for the ball" foul.
Only one I didn't agree with the majority was the baseball one. Although, I'd only be SLIGHTLY more lenient. Does it really matter if a manager is yelling at you? That doesn't effect the game in anyway. Your strike zone stays the same size, and anything outside of that there are rules set in stone. What is the manager going to do when you call a close home plate call out? Absolutely nothing.
I think this poll shows just how much the "star" system Stern has instituted is reviled. The football and baseball questions were put in to show just how silly NBA refereering is.
I disagreed with majority in the baseball question in that it just referred to arguing with an umpire, not any assault on anyone. In a really frustrating game, if someone blows a bit in the 9th inning and it does not get past words, I'd be inclined to say tell them to shut up and then let it be. I also disagreed on Rondo - I don't know if he was intentionally trying to hurt/foul or just going for the ball and clobbered the guy. Since I don't know, I'm not in his head, I gave benefit of the doubt. With the caveat that it should not matter. The results was flagrant.
It's funny how people always complain about NBA officials having too much impact on the outcome of a game, yet in this poll they seem to be wishing for the complete opposite.
I don't get it. If anything, it means the opposite. Fans are tired of the refereeing being able to impact the game. The referees are supposed to enforce the rules regardless of time, score, player, etc. If Roy commits a charge with .5 seconds left, call it a charge. If it's a block, call it a block. These are pretty definitive. Let the play (within the rules) dictate who wins and loses. The refs are supposed to be the representatives of the league, enforcing the rules. If a player doesn't play by them, no matter what time, etc., they should be called for a foul. That's not "letting the refs impact the game", that's enforcing league-mandated rules. The only way they negatively "impact the game" is if they start calling the game according to another system. That's BS, and that's what all those fans are decrying in the poll.
he claimed he was trying to intentionally foul Miller in his post game comments, so now you know. We're in full agreement on your last two lines though. Refs shouldn't be expected to determine a players intent at the time of the play. What matters is what they do and in this case he clothes-lined a player. With the benefit of both the video and Rondo's own words, I find it pretty unbelievable that the league is letting this go unpunished... maybe they're hoping for some violence to spice up the ratings? STOMP
The rules allow you to intentionally foul so I'm not sure what kind of conspiracy you're trying to put together. If he hit his arm instead of his face, we aren't even having this conversation. For that matter, if it was Rose who committed the same foul on Perkins, the entire subject would have never been touched upon.
you aren't allowed to intentionally foul above the shoulders, which is exactly what he did and then stupidly admitted to doing. Basically I don't see what your point is. STOMP
He didn't say he was aiming for his head. You keep saying he did, but he didn't. Watch the actual footage instead of your own interpretation of it.
huh??? what do you think I watched? I don't have a rooting interest here other then good hoops. That was a dangerous play every time I've seen it since it happened in real time on my massive plasma in HD. The facts are he did clobber Miller in the head when he had zero chance of making a play on the ball and then later admitted thats what he was trying to do. Pretty simple shit STOMP
See, how can I even attempt to argue against you when you say that? Everybody that is not a Celtics fan wants them to lose because they're the defending champs and completely unlikeable. Why try to pretend like you're impartial?
sweet victim complex you've got going there dude. It must really suck being so paranoid that the world is out to get you. You are really really off base here as there are many players on the Celts who I've admired both in college and at other NBA stops and I've rooted for them time and again when they've matched up against my negative rooting interest from LA. Hell my favorite player of all time (Walton) won a championship there and Oregon's finest athlete ever runs your franchise. I'm sure you don't believe it (so what), but my rooting interest is the Blazers who are in a whole different conference... and I don't expect them to advance to the WCF let alone to the championship where they might meet one of these teams. I'd be saying the same exact thing if it were a Blazer who did this as plays like that are BS and take away from the game. As I said in another thread, if I were a Bull I would be looking for revenge on the first Celtic who went down the lane. After I hurt the guy, I'd let him know it wasn't an accident. Believe it or not I've done exactly that more then once. Thats me as a competitor, but thats not what I want to see as a viewer. STOMP
Ha, why would I care if people hate my team? If they didn't hate them, then that would mean that my team sucks. I know that because my team has sucked for pretty much my entire life and nobody gave a shit about them. I'm not being paranoid, just being realistic about people talking about my team and trying to pass themselves off as impartial. To be honest, if they fined or suspended Rondo, I wouldn't have cared. I'm not stupid enough to think it wasn't a borderline call. Obviously, since I've been a Celtics fan my entire life, I might be looking the other way a bit, but also, I think it's safe to say that 99% of non-Boston fans are rooting against Boston in the series. The only way we could see true "impartial" viewpoints on a situation like this is if it happened in a game between two teams that nobody cares about.
good grief dude. If you're not going to take posters at their word, why bother posting? Just watch the games and imagine that everyone hates you and your team in silence rather then bother us with this nonsense and give us a reason STOMP
I disagree with the notion that the Bulls should just take a shot at Rondo. I think they should follow Garnett's lead and do this to Rondo: Only do it with Aaron Gray
Oh but players try to intentionally foul late all the time to stop the clock or to prevent a 3. They grab a guy around the waist, say. I was being really generous and saying that since I don't know there may have been no intent to hurt. Still does not matter. It's flagrant.
