There has been a lot of discussion about the backup PF position lately, with names from The Birdman, to others like Collison and Brandon Bass being thrown around. Today it appears the Bulls are also shopping Tyrus Thomas. IMO, if you are going to consider a guy like the birdman, then you also need to consider Tyrus Thomas. They are very similar players, but I view Thomas as more talented offensivly, while a guy like the Birdman is better at shot blocking, but not by much. Thoughts?
Doesn't seem like a bad move, but I'm not terribly familiar with him. Does he have any off the court issues?
havent heard of off the court issues.. he's just kind of like Outlaw in terms of IQ... but I would love Thomas instead of Birdman
I'd like to put together a package to get Hinrich and Thomas here. Thomas is a long way away from doing anything in the league, but he would be a nice hustle guy off the bench that has a bit of nasty in him. Hinrich is a big upgrade though, and it could end up paying huge if Thomas realizes his potential.
He's going to want a healthy pay day, and I don't think he's worth anything over the mid-level. Plus he probably won't be happy as a backup playing 10 minutes a game.
I saw some signs that Tyrus is starting to progress some this year. I just don't know if he brings enough "banger" to the table. He seems to rebound well, block shots, defend. He can finish. But he has no range. To be honest, I am sick of the backup PF being a jump shootin guy. The backup PF should live in the paint, not out by the 3 point line.
The real question with TT is - will he be happy being a backup guy? He sure seems like he considers himself more than that - and he did have some (small) attitude issues during his rookie year, at least (slam dunk only for the money). TT is a very nice guy to have a role-player. The real question is - can he be more and will he be motivated if this is his designated spot?
He did improve, that's why he's not going to sign for cheap or for a long-term contract when he knows he won't play much as all. We need to go after a guy who will be content as a backup.
Hmmm are you sure? Remember when Patterson got busted for dumping his trash in somebody else's dumpster? Patterson was an IQ vacuum.
Yea that is interesting you bring that up. I was watching an interview with Brandon Bass this week, and he said he wanted to stay in Dallas, but he wanted to start. Ok Brandon, I am sure they will sit down Dirk Nowitzki so you can start.......... It just makes me wonder how much of it is talk, and how much of it is just trying to get a fatter contract by stating you are starter quality.
I think Thomas would be good for Backup 4 minutes and spot backup 5 minutes if (god forbid) Joel were to ever play anywhere else.
