The New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 5-4. They won with a Melky Cabrera walk off single that drove in Robinson Cano. There just seems to be that magical feel you have this year with this Yankees team. I can’t remember the last time there was this feeling. It wasn’t there last year. You have the Yankees coming back in games all year, the camaraderie of the team with players like Burnett who puts pies in players faces after a come back and you have A-Rod and Jeter smiling. When the Yankees are down, you never get the feeling they are out because you know they have it in them to make a come back and win. It goes all the way down the line from Jeter to Cabrera. Andy Pettitte pitched a good game. He made only two mistakes, the home run to Raul Ibanez and the home run to John Mayberry. Both pitches were out and over the middle of the plate. Raul Ibanez, who’s having a heck of a year, hit a 4-Seam Fastball out and over centerfield and Mayberry smashed a slider. In the fifth inning, the game got away from Pettitte a little bit but he showed his veteran grit and got through two more innings. Overall it was a good performance from Pettitte. He was a strike throwing machine. He had a great strike to ball ratio and his control was dead on. He was pitching in and pitching out and hitting both sides of the plate. He was mixing in his change up very well. He threw a lot of strikes and counted on his defense. He gave up five hits and made some great pitches but really didn’t get into any jams. All of his innings were fast and he didn’t have many base runners. The Phillies did make him work because he threw a lot of pitches but he only walked two batters and the only mistakes he made were the two home runs. He struck five batters out with a wicked slider that had great spin and a nasty cutter which he worked in all game. Phil Coke had great velocity on his fastball and had a slider that had a great break to it at 11″. If this isn’t the Yankees’ year, then I don’t know what year is. They have everything going for them. They know how to win from behind, they have great pitching, great “clutch” hitting and great defense. Yup, the Yankees win. I hope every one is enjoying their Memorial Day weekend.
Huge win by the Yanks last night. They cut the division lead down to half a game, which is huge. Melky has also been money this year. You could argue that he's been our best, most consistent hitter since being inserted in the starting lineup. He's certainly playing like he's got something to prove this year after losing the starting job initially to Gardner. Plus, he's been absolutely clutch. Last night was his 3rd walkoff hit of the season.
Melky has been so awesome and I wish that he was batting higher in the order so he would get more RBI opportunities.
