The New York Yankees lost to the Cleveland Indians by a score of 5-4 because of a walk off base hit by Cleveland Indian third baseman Johnny Peralta. Phil Hughes started but got the no decision. Phil Coke got the loss. Phil Hughes had a decent outing even if the box score doesn’t say so. He had a great strike to ball ratio and that could of been the problem. He had a lot of 1-2 counts and would try to make the perfect pitch and got too cute. When the batters had a 1-2 count on Hughes, they would keep fouling off his pitches and this lead to a high pitch count. As a result, Phil threw 95 pitches in five innings. He was throwing his fastball on both sides of the plate effectively and had great extension on his curveball. He was throwing his fastball early in the count and he had great velocity on it which was reaching 94 mph. In the past, this game might of gotten away from Phil Hughes but he developed some mental toughness and only gave up four runs. He had some bad breaks in the third inning because of a jam shot by Asdrubal Cabrera that Brett Gardner over played. Chien-Ming Wang was great. His sinking fastball was awesome and he was showing the same sinker that made him an 18 game winner. What more can you say about Mark Teixeira? I’m sure he’s hoping that May would never end. He had another dominating game and one dominating month. Player of the Game: Cleveland Indian third baseman Johnny Peralta. He made the biggest hits of the game. Player of the Month: Mark Teixeira. I thought it was a mistake that the Yankees got him after the month of April he had. Let’s hope for another repeat of May in June.
