Signs Point to DeMarcus Ware Getting Extension

For more than a year, the Cowboys have safeguarded against losing their best defensive player. DeMarcus Ware, who in theory could hit the market as a free agent after this season, most likely isn’t going anywhere. The team has put itself in a position where it could pay Ware like the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. The Cowboys released players such as WR Terrell Owens and OLB Greg Ellis, who carried salaries that outweighed their usefulness, and traded down — not up, as people suspected — into the third round in a very un-Jerry Jones-like move on Draft Day. But when will Ware be re-signed? Reports are that the two sides are not close, even amid rumors that some basic parameters of a deal had been discussed. Bottom line: It will happen, but perhaps not in the next few weeks. There’s just no way the Cowboys are going to let Ware hit the open market, but the lack of a deal, meanwhile, makes the situation slightly more tense and interesting.
