Dre Bly Doesn't Lack Confidence

Dré Bly certainly isn’t lacking in confidence. The 32-year-old veteran cornerback, who was picked up off the waiver wire not long after Niners starting RCB Walt Harris went down with what could be a season-ending torn ACL, admitted that his February release from the Broncos was tough to take. But the 10-year vet firmly believes he still has what it takes — 40 career interceptions, including five returned for TDs — to replace Harris as a starter in a defense in dire need of more takeaways after registering only 18 (tied for worst in the NFC ) last season.

“It’s always been easy for me. I’m not trying to be arrogant,” said Bly, who believes his durability adds to his overall value. “I’m here to compete. Based on what I’ve been my whole life, I’ve never lost. I want to be on that field.”

But the fact that third-year pro Tarell Brown also has his sights set on the starting RCB job — after recently declaring in no uncertain terms that he considered himself the best athlete on the team — has created what promises to be a very intriguing battle between a pair of feisty, undersized players with very similar physical styles.

“They’re saying it’s an open competition (between Brown and Bly), but I think Tarell has the advantage,” said one team insider. “Bly did not play well last year, and if he really still had something left, he would not have been available when Harris got hurt, I don’t think. But maybe he can recapture his old glory. Both of them like to take chances, which makes them a lot different than Harris. Whoever starts, I think the defense will be a lot more high-risk, high-reward in nature. The need to force more turnovers is really being stressed.”

Bly is one of those players you are cheering for and then cursing the very next play. I guess the 49ers could use someone willing to gamble at CB to improve their takeaway +/- differential, but the pash rush has to vastly improve this season.
