Re: UFC 99: The Comeback (June 13th)

Not the PPV of the year, but not terrible. UFC 99 was just okay, I guess.

I was unhappy with Dan Mirgliotta for not recognizing that al Turk had been poked. Seemed VERY obvious. Should've stopped the fight to inspect his eye. It was an uninspiring performance by Cro Cop up until that point, too.

Wandy looked like he was fighting underwater. Nothing was fast or crisp.

Velasquez has a hell of a chin. He recovered from brutal shots three or four times to dominate the fight.

Swick/Saunders and Uno/Fisher were snoozers. I had high expectations for those fights. Didn't really come through.

I thought Dan Hardy won the fight 29/28 pretty clearly. I don't know how Davis got the decision from one judge.

Did Wandy say the UFC is sanctioned in New York, now?

Re: UFC 99: The Comeback [SPOILERS!!!]

You would think with a guy covering his eyes that the ref would stop to see if he what happend. I was dissapointed in the ending also.

I agree with you about the Dan Hardy fight...but I could see how it was split.

Supposedly the UFC handed out free tickets to fill-out the arena, but that's an unconfirmed rumour.

Wanderlei also congratulated Dana for getting MMA legalized in NY.

Did he let the cat out of the bag?

Everyone thought Kongo was the answer to Cain. Cain is the real deal. I hope he gets a fight with BROCK in the near future. That guy is the best heavy in the UFC right now. Yes, I SAID IT!!!

Brock is a damn good wrestler and probably about 40 pounds heavier than Cain. I don't see Cain being able to man handle Lesnar on the ground like he did Kongo.

Also, Kongo rocked Cain in the stand up. Lesnar will do that, too.

Cain has a chin of steel. Kongo hit him but it never once phased him. Any other heavyweight would have probably buckled. Cain completely dominated Congo all three rounds. I think he's a much better rounded fighter than Brock Lesnar. Lesnar relies on brute strength and speed. Not on skills. Its definitely not the time to fight Brock yet, but I think it time Cain has that opportunity to beat him.

Yeah he has a chin of steal, but he was rocked a couple of times. When he was rocked, he saved himself by taking down Kongo. I don't think he'd be able to do that to Lesnar. Lesnar's size and strength and wrestling skills are much much better than Kongo. I'm not saying that Cain doesn't have a chance against Lesnar, I just don't think its a good one. Maybe once he becomes more seasoned.

Lesnar's power is pretty damn impressive. His strength and size is something Cain would have a problem with, I think.

^ Exactly. Definitely not now. I'd like to see Cain move up the rankings and fight others first. He definitely needs more wins behind his belt. I was just so shocked to see so many people dismiss him and think Kongo was gonna wreck him.

I think I picked Cain to win. I need to check the thread, I'm pretty sure I did.

Where would you like to see him go from here?

    Cain vs. Dos Santos?
    Cain vs. Carwin?

Carwin might have the wrestling ability to keep Cain on the feet. Carwin's power is unreal, I think this matchup provides a lot of difficulties for Cain. I think this is the most likely matchup because as far as I know, Carwin has no matchups lined up and Cain should be able to have a quick turn around and fight soon.

EDIT: Yeah, I had Cain winning a UD :]

Mustapha al-Turk and his manager Ken Pavia are likely to appeal his loss, but I don't know to whom. German boxing commission?

Mustapha has had a rough go in the UFC so far.

1st fight he got a ball shot.

2nd fight he got an eye poke.

I was impressed with Cain but was also thinking Brock's extra 30 lbs would manhandle him and Cain wouldn't have nearly as much top position vs him. Ditto Carwin who hits like a Mack Truck whereas Cain just outworks you with the strikes. Carwin can end your night a lot faster.

I didn't think Congo has much of a chance and when Cain weighed in 9lbs heavier, I knew it was over.
Still if Congo has been smarter and stopped closing the distance all of the time, he coulda fought like Rich and try and pick Cain apart from a distance.
His over zealousness got him put on his back eating fists.

I love Ben Saunders and all, but dang what was up with that grapple/hugging he was doing to start the fight. Swick looks like a skeleton with skin at 170. Still it appears to be working for him.

I read some speculation about Wand retiring, but IMO it's different than Chuck's situation. He went to a Decision and actually had Rich in trouble a couple of times. He lost but he also put on a good fight. So long as he's putting on good fights, let him fight dammit.
