I guess if he's the best option available I'd rather see us overpay then do nothing. This cap space is a one time opportunity. But if we can get a player like Gerald Wallace or Luol Deng in a salary dump that might look better 3 years from now. edit: I don't see us going after Artest, I can't see KP or Allen accepting the risk to our "culture". Maybe if our core was around 30 and more established but they are still quite young and the team hasn't been full of good characters for a long enough period.
I wonder if Sheed wouldn't mind backing up Aldridge and Oden for a few years...? If we could get a good point guard, I don't think we'd need Hedo, especially for that much money.
I'd rather have Josh Childress or Marvin Williams. I don't think either of them are in a position to ask for 10 mil a season and they won't be declining at the end of their deals.
Totally agree...He only done this this well in ORL. On top of that all his stats have considerably dropped from the year before. Then you factor in his age for a 5 year contract. ...I just think WHOEVER gets him will be disappointed sooner than later.
Yeah, I could get on board with that. I doubt Chill is coming back from Greece though to take less money (currently the eqv. of about 10 million dollars tax free) Marvin Williams is kind of a tweener 3/4, but I think he's more consistent and talented than our own 3/4 Travis. I think KP has bigger plans than that.
You sometimes have to over-pay to get the FA you want. The catch is, our first priority needs to be PG. If we are forced to over-pay, let's do it at the right position! I really wish we knew what was *really* going on in Hedo's head. Is he thinking "this is my last chance for a big contract, and I have to milk it for all I can!".....or is he thinking "I am worth $10 Million!" The former I understand - the latter scares me. We don't need a third or fourth banana who thinks he is Larry Bird.
Let someone else sign him for that. I'd give him 4 years 34 million. But we may be better off just getting a group of short term vets while our young talent develops. Miller, Hill, McDyess.
FUCK NO I'll agree with the other poster who said, "He just doesn't feel like the right guy" Maybe if it's him and then another bigger piece it would feel better. Baby steps I guess.
Yes I'd do it. We have this one-time small window to get a FA with cap-room and if Hedo is the best available option then take him. My worst fear is not doing anything rather than overpaying someone.
How much would Artest cost? 7, 7.5, 8, and 9? Certainly less with as much or more production. He doesnt fit the culture? I disagree. He is a hard worker. He plays the game the right way. He is a good team mate and outside of his past problems, he s been a quality guy. With our group of guys he would continue doing well I think.
...as long as they are all healthy, then I would have to agree with you. Sheed is ready for a change of scenery and a little extra motivation these days [Detroit / Michigan in general are very depressing places right now]
A couple things to keep in mind. A free agent can only get 8% annual raises. A deal netting him 50 million for 5 years would need to start just north of 8.5 million per year.
Its a starting point in a negotiation. But I bet he gets 4 years and $40 million, and it should be us who gives it to him.
Good point about 8%, but over 5 years at 8% raises (from the initial year), the salaries would look something like this: 1: $8.17m 2: $9.4772m 3: $10.1308m 4: $10.7844m 5: $11.438m Total: $50.0004m The raises would be .6536m a year. Ed O.
I totally disagree about Artest. I do not want that headcase anywhere near this team. We do not have A Duncan/Ginoboli or Jordan/Pippen type core to deal with him (thinking of Rodman).
