I already have a few thousand nearly dead cats in my freezer. Let me get rid of them so I can overpay for your dead cats.

    Cool?

If you want, I can give you $10 trade-in on each of your nearly dead cats. Assuming they are sufficiently near death.

I hope we aren't offering him a starting contract of $10 mil.

If we are, I hope it runs counter to most NBA salaries and actually scales down, to say $6 mil after four years. That way we can unload him like a hooker on a Sunday morning when we're done with him.

Yeah because expiring contracts like Raef, Sabas, Damon, Nick Van Exel, Shareef got us so much in trade!

    Not sure if anyone cares about the numbers, but working off of the following premise we would only have to waive or trade one of Freeland/Kopo;

    1. The Blazers have $8 mil cap room.
    2. Hedo wants 5 years/$50 mil.
    3. The Blazers agree to item 2.
    4. Blazers waive one of Freeland/Kopo, giving them an extra $8,824,000 of cap room.

    With a starting salary of $8,824,000, with max 8% raises (8,824,000 x .08= annual raises of $705,920)

    Year 1= $ 8,824,000
    Year 2= $ 9,529,920
    Year 3= $10,235,840
    Year 4= $10,941,760
    Year 5= $11,647,680
    __________________
    $51,647,680

Now obviously this is more than 5/$50 mil. Better mathematicians could nail it exactly with maybe a 5% raise. The point being is to illustrate the Blazers would only have to waive or trade one of Freeland/Kopo.

That's exactly my point. All the expiring contracts you listed were over $10 mil. Pretty tough to trade. A $6-7 mil contract seems a lot easier.

Jamaal Magloire? Channing Frye? Steve Blake? Travis Outlaw? All had (for all intents and purposes) a <7M expiring contract.

It may not be about what Hedo deserves, it might be about getting a ring. How much is a ring worth?

IF we have renounce any of our players to sign Hedo, I'll have a tough time with that. Pritchard won't do that though.

I was thinking about this... couldn't we do a simple sign and trade with Orlando where they sign him at higher raises, we send them cash ($3m) and we have the cap space to absorb Hedo... they get a trade exception and they get actual cash... and Hedo gets potentially more money since he's getting larger raises.

    Right?

Yeah ... at least I think this is viable under the CBA, I'll have to check out Larry Coon's CBA FAQ. Who knows, maybe we even throw in Outlaw so they get somebody on an expiring contract who can play a little bit of the 3 and the 4 off the bench along with the cash considerations and we'd still have maybe 3-4 million in cap room to play around with afterwards?

We lost our trade exception the second we went below the cap.

Plus, we are Hedo's only bidder, so we don't need to do anything but negotiate down

Yes, this can happen -- maybe we would have to add a future 2nd round pick. Orlando got Rashard Lewis from Seattle this way, allowing them to give him 6 years (at 122m, whoops!) instead of 5.

That's not what he's talking about -- in this case Orlando would get a "newly created" TE by us not sending them any salary.

Also, the idea is that if for some reason WE did agree to give him 50 million, this way we wouldn't have to renounce anybody.

Why do we need to renounce anyone? Shouldn't we have close to 8 million in cap space?

You don't keep raising the price if you are bidding against yourself.
