http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/or...f/2009/07/when_money_talks_turkoglu_walk.html We failed because KP and co didn't do a good enough job of showing Turkoglu the city. Bull.
Canzano & Jaynes are idiots. Liars, too. They are why Portland has the worst media of any city in the country with a major pro team. Both of them love to kick people when they appear to be down and stick a knife in the back.
So Jaynes thinks we shouldn't have put on the tour, and Canzano thinks we didn't go far enough with the tour. Let's put the two of them in Thunderdome. Two men enter, one man leaves. And then let's kill the one that leaves. barfo
Best idea I've heard in ages! Gotta love these half-assed "sports writers". The battle is over, and all they can think of is roaming the battlefield, putting the wounded to the sword. The fact that they come to mutually exclusive conclusions as to how the Blazers "messed up", speaks for itself.
Actually, I do. I also read several different newspapers. Thus far, the Portland media is far and away the worst. Far and away.
There are 5.5 million people in the Toronto area. Portland has what, a million? Portland needs guys like Jaynes and Canzano to talk shit, wouldn't sell papers here if they didn't. They are like snakeoil salesmen. In a large market, there are Canzano's and Jaynes' just nobody pays attention because they look like fools next to real journalists. Portland has no real journalists so Jaynes and Canzano go unchecked. I am guessing neither actually believes what they write
You guys sound like small town idiots. Sorry, but Canzano was named the best sports writer in the country by the AP. Big deal if he had a take you didn't like.
I agree with canzono. The blazers did a good job trying to convince Hedo to come here for less money. But it didn't work. They should have done a great job. Fly him and his wife out here on Blazer one. Show them the best that Portland has to offer. That might not have worked either. But it would have been nice to see us give it our best shot. Does anyone remember the Chris Dudley courting process? That's what we should have done with Hedo. But what do I know. Maybe the miles situation ruined everything And the Blazers are just putting on a good show for the fans that they know will be ultimately futile.
I don't see how you can say that.. we've had some of the best coverage of the Blazers this past season -- more than I could ever imagine. From Quick's Behind the Locker Room pieces, to an all-sports radio station that is essentially all Blazers all year, and all the other stuff OregonLive does, we have one of the best media in covering the team. The coverage is great IMO. I think we're grateful for what we've got here.
It is a very sad comment that anybody would consider Canzano a "sports writer" at all. Try "low rent gossip columnist", or maybe "tabloid parasite". If one has to be a "big town sophisticate" to appreciate his work - I will happily hunker down here in my little mud hut.
I don't know. I think he has some good points. When I heard the first rumors that Turk's wife had a strong preference for Toronto, AND then I heard that Turk was coming to Portland alone, that raised a red flag for me right away. We don't know if the Blazers tried to court his wife too. But, if they didn't Canzano is right that the Blazers screwed up. I don't know if Brandon Roy called Turk, which should have been the very minimum, and Canzano is right, Roy should have been in Portland meeting with Turk. Don't think he was here. If he wasn't, then Canzano has a point. I don't know why some of the posters here want to give a free pass to the Blazers organization. We don't have all the facts. But, this is what we do know: The Blazers promised that the "Cap Space Plan" would eventually lead to an outstanding acquisition. After all that time, their Number 1 target was the very underwhelming free agent, Hedo Turkoglu. After a public courtship, and a contract offer that was already painfully high, Hedo told them yes, then told them no. Maybe the Blazers turn this around and end up with a good result after all. But, what we do know is that by their own stated goals they have FAILED. Why we can't critisize, analyize or attempt to dissect that failure, I am not sure.
I agree with this. The Blazers' FO did fail if you consider what their stated objectives were. Fortunately, I think this will work out well for them. Turkoglu would not have helped this team.
I congratulate John Canzano on winning best sports writer in the country. An amazing task to submit five articles with the same premise (sob story revolving around sports that inform the reader base that hey there are more important things than sports) that he actually writes at least ten times a year. For the past seven years.
