Why would you play hardball with Roy, anyways?

The guy has done everything to get a 5 year max deal.

Roy single handedly turned this franchise around from the Jailblazers back to the Trailblazers.

And KP and Co. will only commit to four years?

    Fuck you, KP!

I didn't listen to the interview. I don't have to.

Roy wants to get paid. I don't blame him. If he comes on and says that he wants to be a Blazer forever at any price, he's just undercutting his position.

KP should not give him the stars and the moon to stay with the Blazers. He should be offered a fair deal that keeps him in town but also doesn't overpay him. I hope that KP is less easily swayed by emotion than many on this board, and I would bet that he is.

Why not? People are seriously overreacting to a perfectly normal negotiation.

Hmm, what do you mean "not overpay?" If this were baseball, and contracts could be arbitrarily high, I'd completely agree. But the NBA caps salaries. Are you saying that you don't think Roy is worth the max?

You can bet that his agent(s) coached him on what to say.

Doesn't the CBA basically save management from offering the stars and the moon? What did Bosh get? What did Carmelo get? Give him that.

Exactly what the fuck is there to negotiate? The team goes as Roy goes.

    Exactly.

I hated hearing Brandon try to justify him getting a max contract in that interview.

Makes me glad that I don't have an emotional fan base overreacting to each of my contract negotiations. I guess that is part of the business, but people need to realize that any party that is not willing to walk away from a negotiation is going to get hosed. KP has a whole bunch of these coming up and I'm sure is providing the appropriate amount of pushback.

And why is KP the only bad guy here? Roy and his agent are on the other side. Nobody knows what was offered to Roy. R-E-L-A-X!

Roy wants MORE years, not LESS...it really doesn't make any sense as to why KP is dicking around

Why? He's a big boy, I'm sure he can take the horror of explaining why he's worth many millions of dollars.

I think he's definitely worth the max, but the idea that his having to "justify" a max deal in words in an interview is some crushing injustice is a bit silly.

Indeed. It would a good idea to not overpay B-Roy.

So, don't pay him more then the maximum possible.

A max deal is what the guy earned, not only for his play but also for allowing himself to be made into the face of the team. He is, by far, the most popular Blazer since Drexler. The team has built it's entire marketing scheme around him.

This has nothing to do with emotional attachment. It is a basketball and a business decision. The basketball side, he is far and away the best player on the team. The business side, imagine the backlash if Roy walks away from the team. I wouldn't attend one more Blazer game until KP was fired if that happened. I would not be the only one.

If they think they are losing money now, just wait until they only have attendance figures that are less then 8,000.

It's an embarrassment on KP's part, actually. You don't fuck around with hurting your best player's ego.

It puts doubt in Roy's mind if the team is really committed to him and winning.

Exactly. C'mon.. there's only a certain amount we can give him. MAX him out! Good gawd... this is Brandon freakin' Roy. No one pays to watch the GM manage our team.. I want to see Brandon play for the next 20 years.

The only thing embarrassing in this whole situation is how many people are rending their garments over a non-issue.
