He can't leave in 2010, Portland has the right to match any offer.

Not when another team will pay him the max as an RFA next summer. One way or another, Roy will get his money. May as well just max him now unless they plan on not matching next summer.

    They are feeling generous?

Next time you guys find a car you really like, just go pay sticker for it okay? If you are not willing to pay sticker then you must not really like the car.

It is so easy to criticize other people's spending habits.

Exactly, so when another team pays him the max as an RFA next summer, either Portland will match or let him go . One way or another, Roy will get his money. May as well just max him now unless they plan on not matching next summer. At the very least, Roy will get 5 years out of somebody at a near max deal. Boggles the mind. :dunno:

    Because he asked for it?

Williams and Paul asked for 4 year deals, I'm willing to bet the Jazz and Hornets would love to have signed them to 5 year deals.

He might accept a 4 year, max deal. If that's what the team wants and Roy accedes, then everyone is happy.

Why were we willing to offer Hedo Turkoglu 5 years, $50 million? Was he going to replace Brandon's salary slot on the books?

Roy will get a 5 year max deal from somebody next summer if he doesn't sign an extension. Roy will play all of next year non-guaranteed, and then the Blazers will match and say "sorry Brandon about having this hang over our heads all year."

The more I think about it, the less sense it makes.

He wants 5 years. He has no reason to sign a 4 year deal when he'll get 5 years from somebody next year. Then, either the Blazers match, or they don't. Seems like a lot of unnecessary antimosity from the team to their franchise player if that happens.

Roy will not play next year without an extension (meaning he will sign one, not that he won't play). The risks are way too great. They have until October 31. You have two experienced negotiators who have worked together before. It won't happen right away, but it will happen in time.

No. There are no salary slots under the current CBA.

We were willing to offer Hedo $50m because we wanted to get him on the team and that's what it was going to take (or as high as the team was willing to go).

With Roy, when he has two more years (at least) under contract with the Blazers, there is certainly justification for not giving Roy a blank check.

Wouldn't that be interesting. I know it isn't happening, but that would solve the Rudy issues.

    CP3
    Rudy
    Batum
    LMA
    Oden

    Would look pretty sweet.

If I was Roy, I would wonder if the Blazers are committed to winning. Forget how much they preach it, it looks like Blazers have gone small market mentality lately. They allowed themselves to get outbid for Turk, they haven't locked down the face of the franchise, they let Raef's contract expire without utilizing it.

    Have the Blazers gone cheap?

I guess we'll see. I have no idea what the negotiations actually look like, what exactly Portland is asking for and what exactly Roy is looking for, so I can't comment on who's being most reasonable. I am not philosophically opposed to teams negotiating, even with great young players.

Ultimately, I think the overwhelming likelihood is that Roy is in Portland long-term and that Roy will be paid extremely well, so I can't really get that upset. Just seems like a lot of anger (on the forum in general, not aiming that at you) over something that will probably not alter the course of the franchise or Roy's life all that much in the end.

Or he'll demand a trade before camp/hold out of camp. Both of which I'd advise my client to do if I knew somebody will give him a 5-year max deal as an RFA and I'm not signed by October 31.

This sort of stuff is right along the lines of something Elgin Baylor or Chris Wallace would do. That's so sad.

How do we know that it was 5 years, guaranteed? What if the Blazers offered 3 years and 2 more years with a team option? or 4 years guaranteed with a 1 year team option?

Maybe this is what they offer Roy as well - 4 + 1 - and he wants 5 guaranteed, or maybe they offer 5 guaranteed and he wants 4+1 with an early termination option for himself?

I forgot about the qualifying offer year. So, Roy would have to play two seasons at risk. The only players I have ever seen do that are ones that really want to get out of town. Roy doesn't appear to fit in with them.

I thought he could become an RFA next year regardless of being offered a QO?
