Does he actually believe the stuff he writes? One-year fan contract? That's about as a non-sensical approach as I ever read from him: http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/or...f/2009/07/how_about_a_oneyear_deal_for_b.html
It was a fair and good column. Interesting take, provocative. That is his job. I don't get why everyone here rails on him so much. He's a sports columnist. He writes sports columns. He's a good writer, not a homer, knows his stuff.
He knows the emotional story lines, but he doesn't know the CBA, or how trades can actually work. He also knows how to say something, without saying it, so when he get's emails about it he can either denying saying it (because he didn't actually say it) or say he did say it (without actually saying it).
Because, in this case, it's FAR too early to be fanning these types of flames. In fact, it's a veritable insult to me, as a fan, to be trotting out rubbish such that the fans should establish some sort of one-year contracts with the team. Isn't that what season tickets are.....effectively, one-year contracts......the Blazers' "only" fan guarantee? As an aside, though, I'd love to see Canzano write a piece about Martell's improvements.
He's a sensationalist. He reuses the same basic story premise for all of his 'outstanding' articles. Tear-jerker about some down on their luck person then goes on to remind his reader base that there are bigger things in life than sports. He has consistently called out people in the paper and his blog for how they don't take responsibility for making mistakes, or for getting things wrong. Yet when he himself consistently butchers the basic understanding of the CBA, facts about Blazer players and personnel, and other random players/facts about whatever league he is writing about he does not admit it. I have personally seen (and done it myself) him be corrected in the comments section of his blog post only to see the information in his blog be corrected later (with no mention or cross out) in the day with the correcting post in the comments section mysteriously removed. You know my favorite Canzano moment was when he was the source for Quick claiming Iavaroni was going to be the head coach, and when it came out that he was the source and was wrong. You know what Canzano did? He wrote an article the next day blaming Nash and Patterson for not being forth coming enough with the local media guys so they couldn't break stories. He said that because the organization was shrouded in secrecy they (Quick and he) couldn't get the people the right information. Not that he messed up, not that he heard wrong. It was their fault for him not cross-checking his information before he gave it to Quick. Plus that whole thing where he makes himself the story in 95% of his articles is pretty annoying too.
I'm beginning to feel that way. - The Roy contract fiasco - The Comcast fiasco - Threats about Paul Allen not "subsidizing" the team to stay in Portland - Elevated ticket prices in a poor economy, some as much as 300% The Blazers sure don't seem to have much loyalty to their players or their fans. I'm happy Canzano wrote this article.
One of those pointless, not as smart as it thinks it is JC articles where it just meanders and never actually goes anywhere.
If you can take your emotions out of it and put aside your disgust or disdain for Canzano for a moment (and I certainly have excess of each to spare) it's actually a pretty good article. All he's really saying is that organizations (or anybody really) aren't worthy of blind devotion, and if they start fucking up people should feel they have the option to disinvest themselves emotionally. I don't mind the larger point being given here: If you think professional sports teams (players, coaches and management) are loyal to fans out of some sense of emotional attachment and are not just interested in selling you a product and taking your money, think again. Therefore why should fans be blindly loyal?
I still think that once this Milsap contract is or isnt matched by Utah, thats when the extension talks are going to be more focused and the deals will be agreed on soon after.
So Millsap takes priority over Roy/LMA? Or will Roy/LMA get higher offers if Millsap is matched? Somebody had better clue Roy in to this, because he seems to think that there are serious and focused negotiations ongoing right now.
This article would carry more weight under 2 conditions. First, I doubt Canzano has a clue what the issue is. "New CBA?" "NFL syle hard cap?" "Sorry, no hablo difficult information." Second, it is easy to tell other people to give up their emotional investment in the team, when *your* emotional investment is negative! It would be different if the guy actually liked the team.
I didn't read it as Canzano telling people how to act. If the team bungles certain moves in the future, fans start to go away. We've already had that happen once in the past decade. I also like the new penny-pinching philosophy that Leiweke talks about, considering the team raised ticket prices (some dramatically) in a market with the 2nd highest unemployment rate in the nation.
Canzano should be fired- he enjoys accentuating the negative. I often regret reading his pieces. The sad thing is that he has some points- Roy should be extended for the full five years- as a top five player, he's worth the max. And pritchard's moves have been questionable, though I still hold out hope. I would have loved to have had either Jefferson or Vince Carter here and it seems doubtful at this point that we'll pick up anyone with similar talent. But, at this point, waiting until the trade deadline may be the only option.
You know I had some respect for Canzano before this whole Brandon Roy mess. He's a columnist: he's supposed to be controversial, fun, and cause some stir. Sometimes I'd agree with him, sometimes I'd disagree, but I couldn't care less. But who does he think he is putting words in Brandon's mouth and thus causing this whole fiasco with Brandon's contract? It's ridiculous. Everyone in the world knows Brandon will be re-signed. I know it. You know it. Your friends know it. The pet dog knows it. He's just trying to find something fun to write about during a time where there's not much going on, but he did so in a completely inappropriate manner. I mean read what ONLY BRANDON said in this report: http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/or...f/2009/07/brandon_roy_to_blazers_ive_don.html Now where in that report does Brandon come across as being "frustrated and disappointed"? He sounds to me like that yes, sure, he'd love to get a contract signed (as would any other player in pro sports), but he understands that with NBA contracts comes negotiations. Frustrated and disappointed are NOT accurate words to use. Not even close. It's a textbook example of putting words in someone's mouth, and I lost a lot of respect toward Canzano for lowering himself to doing that.
And these kind of reactions is why hes good at his job... of course not everyone is going to agree with him, hes in a business too.. They need to keep the readers interested so he writes what he must. I kind of agree with what he is saying even though I do not like the way he wrote it, but im not worried about it, I think Roy and Aldridge will both be signed to extensions and im surprised so many people are on Nates case when it SEEMS like 70% of the people dont think hes the coach to take us to a championship. I think its a win win. p.s. about damn time this site lets me sign in, lol.. didnt know I had to go to the main page to sign in, been reading hear a lot. see ya around.
