And I disagree that the deal was the beginning of the end. I don't think we'd be any better off now if we had kept him.
Everyone says they were against it, I wish there was a forum then where we could all look back and see what everyone really thought about it at the time.
I'll admit I was for it. Dale Davis was coming off an All-Star season I think, and we were getting someone established for a guy who hadn't done anything yet. I remember a lot of Blazer fans laughing about JO's vow to be an All-Star someday. I was brainwashed by the Whisitt regime of getting as much talent possible, and basically playing fantasy basketball without any regard to chemistry or fit. We basically got Dale Davis to be a "name" guy who had essentially just six fouls to use against Shaq.
I was against it and felt it was a mistake. I remember being pretty animated about it the next day talking about it with a guy at work. Alex is right: Davis was brought in to provide six fouls against Shaq in the playoffs because it was perceived he'd done a decent job on him that year. It was a desperation move and a bad one. IIRC: Davis was an "all star" PF from the weak east, after averaging something like 10 points a game.
Like who cares? A sure sign that KP's summer action is less than noteworthy? We're talking about Jermaine and Davis? Sorry - just perplexed. {by no means poking fun at the creator of this thread!!! - Just standing back and looking at the topic - as we are in the midst of trade/signing season. I'm starting to think that KP wants to simply add a player and then "bake it" without giving up one single asset!
Of course, JO only became an all-star in the east. Not sure he's so different than Dale Davis in that regard. barfo
for it. we had to close the window and needed another big body to throw at Shaq...JO was still too small then and we really had an opportunity for the title.
True. But if I had a choice between those two at their very best, I think I'd actually pick JO just because he had more offense. It's too bad he couldn't last too long at the top of his game, he's only 31 but his body is holding up like a 36-38-year-old.
I remember and was impressed by him not being intimidated by Shaq. I remember other people saying he couldn't play center, but not him saying so.
I for one think it was the beginning of the end. We over reacted to the melt down against LA and made some trades that we shouldn't have. I wish they just let that group stay together and play another year.
I voted "indifferent" because I honestly don't remember what I thought about it at the time, if I had to guess I suppose I would have thought it was a good deal since we had an all-star in Davis coming back. You know what they say about hindsight ... you've got to be pretty flexible to twist your body around so you can look at your own ass.
I was all for it. All Jeranium wanted to do was stand around under the hoop and wait for someone to pass him the ball so he could dunk, and Davis was a "Bruise Brother" Buck Williams kinda guy...
I think it's funny how many people were "against" the trade, when all I heard at the time was how much of a boon it was for Portland. I was very much in favor of the trade because Jermaine sucked every time he actually saw playing time, and we already had Grant and Sheed. I'm not afraid to admit that.
That's kind of how I felt as well. I'm not going to say people are lying, but I'd say more than 38 percent were in favor of the trade.
I was for the trade, but I didn't see things going down with Briand Grant and Rasheed Wallace like they did.
