How do you think it will end? I'm thinking he'll get his five years.. eventually.. hopefully. (Poll to be added)
Dwight Jaynes made it today via the Vulcans/Comcast 37. It wasn't a good statement. Smeared Roy good, they did, about his autograph show in Seattle.
Roy will get the contract he wants, LMA (and the others in the next few years) will get less than what they want, as it should be. KP is playing hardball, just like John Nash should've done when Miles was a restricted free agent. Roy is obviously different, but there's no reason to start caving in to agents' demands.
someone not looking to be a dick would be able to comprehend that I'm not directly comparing Miles to LMA. Miles' case represents the dangers of bidding against yourself due to an agent/player talking to the media during contract negotiations. Nash waited to let the market set his price, nobody made Miles an offer, so he/his agent went to the media to complain. Nash gave in and gave him a contract above what he deserved. KP would've called that agent's bluff. It's not entirely the same with LMA in that we're not letting him get to restricted free agency (and that Toronto set the market with Bargnani), but the same principles apply. Don't buy the bullshit from the agents or else you'll overpay for your players. Also, Miles was good at the time. 2003-04 he put up a PER of 16 as a 22 year old. I'd bet that had he avoided injury, and if there had been a decent coach, his story would've turned out quite differently.
I'm not looking to be a "dick", I'm just saying that pulling up Darius Miles as an example when it is not at all relevant seems silly. Miles went to RFA status; Roy and LMA are not there yet, so there are no other bidders at this point. I think it's a poor and irrelevant comparison. Portland outbidded themselves on Miles, and it was one of the dumbest decisions I've seen from the franchise.
you don't see the comparison between what Roy's agent is doing and what Miles' agent did? In this case, the other "bidders" that set the market are fellow maxed out players for Roy, and Bargnani for LMA. sorry for the "dick" remark.
No, not at all. I'd see more of a comparison had Utah offered Millsap a max contract when the other best offer ended up being $9 million/per. Are you saying Roy should ask for a 3 year contract with a 4th year PO, like Chris Paul and Deron Williams? The Blazers bungled the Miles contract when no other suitors presented themselves. Perhaps the worst decision of the Paul Allen era, IMO.
The statements of Miles' agent to the press were what put the pressure on the Blazers. They buckled, and the situation was quite bungled, as you said. Roy just did something similar on Seattle radio. That, to me, is the comparison. Ignore restricted status or not and all of that crap - KP is playing hardball with these agents, Nash didn't.
Brandon Roy >>>>>> Darious Miles as a player, person, and an All-Star who leads a team to the playoffs. No comparison, at all. Bash Roy if you must, but at least be fair about what the guy has accomplished in his career versus a slug like Darius Miles. If KP wants to play 'hardball" with Roy after being shat on by Hedo on a guaranteed 5 year deal, so be it. I'm just not buying it at all.
the only thing I'm comparing is their respective comments to the media during contract negotiations, that's it. They're obviously very different people and players. I just think that Miles is a close-to-home example of why you shouldn't easily give in to an agent's demands. let's agree to disagree.
Roy is making the public statements. Miles never did. That said, I'll agree to disagree, but I don't find the situations at all comparable.
