you do realize that the guy could have been talking shit to the cop even before he showed his ID...even afterwards too. So he is allowed to just verbally assault a police officer with no repercussions? Hell no.

If he was talking shit then he got exactly what he deserved, to be arrested but let go without charges

Ha, this has been a pretty big deal around here. From everything I've heard, I think Gates overreacted. He immediately got upset at the officer, who was just doing his job. Gates even admitted on his website that the hairs on the back of his neck stood up when the officer first approached and asked him to step off the porch. That's a little ridiculous. It definitely seems like Gates is the type of guy that's out to prove some sort of point, now making all types of demands to the police department and making plans to capitalize on the incident. Ironic that all the cop was trying to do was protect the guy's property.

blaming the victim? as ive previously stated- im as mild mannered as they come but if a cop was accosting me- u better believe i would react as defensively as professor gates did. the officer wasnt protecting gates property, he was acting on a bigoted stereotype that african americans couldnt reside in a wealthy neighbourhood. fyi- police depts are as obdurate as they come when it comes to defending their personnel- the dropping of the charges and their public apology is an admission of the officer's misconduct.

you cant really, I guess you could argue that she was profiling but that really hard to do since she DID SEE two men trying to bust the back door open...we'll never know if she would have reported it if the two men were white

    this is a fucking joke...
then you should be put in handcuffs too, maybe you will learn your lesson

making stuff up again I see? Or were you a fly on the wall?

Maybe its YOU using the stereotype that cops are racist as a whole...ever think about that Einstein?

  7. So you think people can put cops under citizen's arrest when cops begin verbally assaulting them, like they often do?

  8. DaRizzle

    cops often verbally assault people
    cops are racist
cops are guilty of racial profiling

any other generic stereotypes you wanna give cops mr know it all 19 year old?

Yeah man! Fuck cops! Fight the power man!

It would be really ironic if a black man was breaking into deception's house, a cop shows up but doesn't stop the guy, just to avoid being called a racist.

  12. You still haven't answered the question.

  13. DaRizzle

    DaRizzle BLAKER

No, you file a police report on the officer

  14. So you think officers should be given special treatment, and not arrested for the same stuff a professor would get arrested for.

Yes, lets make it legal for citizens to arrest cops if the citizen deems it necessary...Nevermind they aren't trained in any kind of law enforcement nor truly know the laws...great idea dude. Im sure that would work out real smooth. Fuck due process right?

Another frickin wannabe anarchist 19 year old...how shockingly normal

I was just introducing a healthy dose of skepticism into the topic. I'm not leaning in any particular direction, to be honest. Don't know enough.

A lot of to do about nothing.

All I see here is a good samaritan, a police officer doing his job, and a brilliant Harvard professor playing the race card.

Given the scale of everything, it doesn't rise to much of anything, and the arrest being tossed is the right result.

I seriously doubt that the cop hassled the guy because he is black, or even wanted to arrest the guy.

dude u are the biggest hypocrite, ive lost all respect for u. u were adamant about how the justice system discriminates against black men and now u nominate this bigoted cop for officer of the year. in the words of president obama, the police dept acted "stupidly". if the cop followed protocol- why would the police dept who have been historically obdurate in their defense of their officers drop all charges against prof. gates and publicly apologize? ill tell u why- its a tacit admission of misconduct on part of the officer as well as the police dept.

well when the "black man" presented ID and it didnt match my address, the cops would have just cause to follow up on the investigation. however, professor gates presented ID and he only became irate when he requested the officers name and the officer refused to reveal it.
