Every summer Arsenal are linked with a whole host of unknown, young and unproven players.

However, after the recent acquisition of Ajax skipper Thomas Vermaelen, it seems that Arsene Wenger may be going for the more ‘experienced’-type players.

Gooner Talk have put together a list of five Defensive Midfielders who have been linked with Arsenal, and in our opinion, should join the Gunners’ this summer.

Of course, it’s just a ‘dream list’ of options, but you’re welcome to leave your opinion in the comments section below!

1. Felipe Melo – Fiorentina

A report in the Daily Mail last week claimed “Arsenal are preparing a renewed £15m bid for Fiorentina’s midfielder Felipe Melo.”

According to Simon Jones, “The fiery Brazilian has been tracked by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger for the past three years, since he was playing in Spain with lowly Almeria.”

Arsenal reportedly made a bid for the defensive midfielder in January and Inter Milan are also eager to sign Felipe Melo. In recent weeks the Fiorentina midfielder has indicated he would be happy to stay at The Viola.

Melo also told an Italian newspaper that he’s flattered to have been linked with Arsenal.

“Obviously it is a good thing that great clubs are interested, as it shows that I worked well,” Melo told La Gazzetta dello Sport.“But as I said, I have a good relationship with Fiorentina, with the directors and the fans.”

2. Lorik Cana – Marseille

A number of top Premier League clubs including Arsenal have been linked to one of the stars of French football this summer. The Albanian midfielder Lorik Cana.

The player has openly admitted to his interest in a move when he told Aujourd ‘Hui Sport, “The door remains open for a departure, even with three years remaining on my contract.“I will talk with my family and my representatives at the end of the season. It will then depend on what I want to do. I believe that if I want to leave, everyone at this club will respect my decision.“It is not certain that I will be terminating my contract though. I am in no rush.“Of the possible destinations in the future, England and Germany are the two leagues that attract me the most.”

3. Thomas Hitzlsperger - Stuttgart

According to The Daily Mail, Arsene Wenger is poised for a surprise £5million move for Stuttgart midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger.

The midfielder did not set the Premier League alight during his previous spell at Aston Villa.

But Wenger is seeking to add experience to his side and the 27-year-old German international with the rocket shot fits the mould.

Hitzlsperger is out of contract next year but it is believed Stuttgart are in talks with Arsenal over a £5million deal.

4. Yohan Cabaye – Lille

In March, Lille midfielder Cabaye said: “Arsenal’s interest is very flattering but I am under contract. Would I be attracted? Of course, no one could refuse that.”

The 23-year-old central midfielder has established himself as one of the best in his position in French football. Cabaye predominantly provides drive and aggression in the Lille centre midfield; he can also play as a defensive midfielder or on the right hand side.

5. Miguel Veloso – Sporting Lisbon

The Sporting midfielder Veloso is practically certain to leave Portugal to play in the Premier League next season, and it seems that only the exact destination is to be ascertained in the next few weeks.

Arsenal were strongly linked with the Portugal star last summer, and Bolton made a bid for him in January. Veloso has continued to express his desire to leave in the Portuguese press.

“I only gave my opinion that I would like, and I have the dream, of playing abroad, I don’t think these words kill anyone,” said Veloso.“What I really want is to continue playing. I said, and I continue to say, I have the dream of playing abroad, but this doesn’t depend only on me.“Sporting always have the last word. When they decide it’s decided. I don’t decide anything. If the boss wants Miguel to leave, it’s his option, not mine. He’s the one who decides and I’ve just got to respect his decisions.”
